Book excerpt: Multimedia experiments are everywhere in contemporary art, but the collaboration and conflict associated with multimedia is not a new phenomenon. From opera to the symphonic poem to paintings inspired by music, many attempts have been made to pair sounds with pictures and to combine the arts of time and space. Counterpoints explores this artistic evolution from ancient times to the present day. The book’s main focus is music and its relationship with painting, sculpture, and architecture. Philippe Junod draws on theoretical and practical examples to show how different art movements throughout history have embraced or rejected creative combinations. He explains how the Renaissance, neoclassicism, and certain brands of modernism tried to claim the purity of each mode of expression, while other movements such as romanticism, symbolism, and surrealism called for a fusion of the arts. Counterpoints is a unique cultural history, one that provides a critical understanding of a popular but previously unheralded art form.

Book The Sense of Community in French Caribbean Fiction

Download or read book The Sense of Community in French Caribbean Fiction written by Celia Britton and published by Liverpool University Press. This book was released on 2010-01-01 with total page 199 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This groundbreaking book analyzes the theme of community in seven French Caribbean novels in relation to the work of the French philosopher Jean-Luc Nancy. The complex history of the islands means that community is often a central and problematic issue in their literature, underlying a range of other questions such as political agency, individual and collective subjectivity, attitudes towards the past and the future, and even the literary form itself. Celia Britton here studies a range of key books from the region, including Édouard Glissant’s Le Quatrième Siècle, Patrick Chamoiseau’s Texaco, Daniel Maximin’s L’Ile et une nuit, and Vincent Placoly’s L’eau-de-mort guildive, among others.

Book Traductio

Download or read book Traductio written by Dirk Delabastita and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-08 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nothing like wordplay can make difference between languages look so uncompromising, can give such a sharp edge to the dilemma between forms and effects, can so blur the line between translation and adaptation, or can cast such harsh light on our illusion of complete semantic stability. In the pun the whole language system may resonate, and so may literary traditions and ideological discourses. It follows that the pun does not only put translators to the test, it also poses a challenge to the views and concepts of those who study translation. This book brings together experts on translation and the pun, as well as researchers representing a variety of other relevant disciplines and schools of thought, ranging from theology to deconstruction and from contrastive linguistics to feminism. It can be read as a companion volume to Wordplay and Translation, a special issue of The Translator (Volume 2, Number 2, 1996), also edited by Dirk Delabastita

Book C leste Boursier Mougenot English edition

Download or read book C leste Boursier Mougenot English edition written by Céleste Boursier-Mougenot and published by Art Book Magazine Distribution. This book was released on 2018-10-10T00:00:00+02:00 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Céleste Boursier-Mougenot produces systems from everyday situations and objects, as well as devices, of which he then extracts their musical and sound potential. In this way, the artist reconfigures both the rhythmic and melodic possibilities of his materials, which he uses to generate sonic forms that he describes as being “living.” Based on a close relationship with the architectural and spatial nature of the exhibition space, each system creates a framework favoring a multi-sensorial experience for the visitor. In 2015, Céleste Boursier-Mougenot is representing France at the 56th Contemporary Art Biennial in Venice. For the Palais de Tokyo, he has conceived a lakeside landscape, leading visitors into a tactile, visual and sonic experience, thus changing their perception of the space. Visitors are drawn into a flow of images, creating doors leading into a hallucinatory journey. Book Naturalism and Unbelief in France 1650 1729

Download or read book Naturalism and Unbelief in France 1650 1729 written by Alan Charles Kors and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2016-06-20 with total page 339 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Atheism was the most fundamental challenge to early-modern French certainties. Leading educators, theologians and philosophers labelled such atheism as manifestly absurd, confident that neither the fact nor behaviour of nature was explicable without reference to God. The alternative was a categorical naturalism. This book demonstrates that the Christian learned world had always contained the naturalistic 'atheist' as an interlocutor and a polemical foil, and its early-modern engagement and use of the hypothetical atheist were major parts of its intellectual life. In the considerations and polemics of an increasingly fractious orthodox culture, the early-modern French learned world gave real voice and eventually life to that atheistic presence. Without understanding the actual context and convergence of the inheritance, scholarship, fierce disputes, and polemical modes of orthodox culture, the early-modern generation and dissemination of absolute naturalism are inexplicable. This book brings to life that Christian learned culture, its dilemmas, and its unintended consequences.
