The second part focuses on the classroom participants, teachers and learners, and the kinds of exchanges that occur in the classroom, group dynamics, the teacher's preparations, the teacher's role in classroom communication, correction of errors, and evaluation of oral expression. The third section contains items concerning the evolution or unfolding of the class from the point of view of theme and mood. The fourth section looks at pedagogical trends and the implications of their application. Annotations of works published in French are written in French; those of works published in English are written in English. (MSE).

Book A Conversation Analysis Approach to French L2 Learning

Download or read book A Conversation Analysis Approach to French L2 Learning written by Clelia König and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-12-06 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a critical examination of second language (L2) learning outside institutional contexts, with a focus on the way second language learners introduce, close, and manage conversational topics in everyday settings. König adopts a Conversation Analysis for Second Language Acquisition (CA-SLA) approach in analyzing oral data from a longitudinal study of L2 learners of French, au pairs in Swiss families, over several years. With this approach the author presents insights into the ways in which L2 learners introduce and close conversational topics in ongoing conversations and how these strategies evolve over time, setting the stage for future research on this little documented process in second language acquisition. This volume contributes toward a greater understanding of L2 learning “in the wild,” making this key reading for students and researchers in second language acquisition, applied linguistics, and French language learning and teaching.

Book The Practical Nature of L2 Teaching

Download or read book The Practical Nature of L2 Teaching written by Joan Kelly Hall and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-07-26 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing on video recordings and transcripts from a wide range of L2 teaching contexts, The Practical Nature of L2 Teaching presents a comprehensive examination of eight sets of specialized actions and action sequences involved in whole group instruction. Each of the chapters highlights in exquisite detail the sophisticated, real-world accomplishment of L2 teaching. The purpose is not to impose a vision of how L2 teaching should be done. Instead, it is to illuminate its complexities and, in so doing, reveal informative differences between idealized understandings of L2 teaching and its lived realities. The book is essential reading for advanced undergraduates, graduate students, and researchers studying and working in the areas of classroom interaction, L2 teaching, and L2 teacher education.

Book L2 Interactional Competence and Development

Download or read book L2 Interactional Competence and Development written by Joan Kelly Hall and published by Multilingual Matters. This book was released on 2011-07-18 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing on data from a range of contexts, including classrooms, pharmacy consultations, tutoring sessions, and video-game playing, and a range of languages including English, German, French, Danish and Icelandic, the studies in this volume address challenges suggested by these questions: What kinds of interactional resources do L2 users draw on to participate competently and creatively in their L2 encounters? And how useful is conversation analysis in capturing the specific development of individuals’ interactional competencies in specific practices across time? Rather than treating participants in L2 interactions as deficient speakers, the book begins with the assumption that those who interact using a second language possess interactional competencies. The studies set out to identify what these competencies are and how they change across time. By doing so, they address some of the difficult and yet unresolved issues that arise when it comes to comparing actions or practices across different moments in time.

Book Teaching and Testing L2 Interactional Competence

Download or read book Teaching and Testing L2 Interactional Competence written by M. Rafael Salaberry and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-05-20 with total page 413 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume features the latest research findings on L2 interactional competence to demonstrate the potential for developing and implementing research-based pedagogy that targets interactional competence (IC) in early instruction in a variety of L2 learning and teaching contexts. Incorporating contributions from both leading and emerging researchers in the area, the book is organized into four sections to provide a systematic account of interactional competence, defined as a set of skills required to co-construct an effective interaction with a variety of interlocutors in a variety of settings, and advocates for IC to be part of a well-rounded curriculum of L2 instruction. The volume provides a comprehensive overview of the different theoretical perspectives on IC within Conversation Analysis, and moves into a discussion of conversation-analytic research findings from a variety of contexts and of their pedagogical implications. The book then presents examples of pedagogy in practice and also illustrates the potential for implementing IC in testing settings. This volume makes a valuable contribution to the growing literature on interactional competence and will be of particular interest to graduate students and researchers in applied linguistics, SLA, language education, curriculum and instruction studies, and educational linguistics. Book Sociocultural Theory and L2 Instructional Pragmatics

Download or read book Sociocultural Theory and L2 Instructional Pragmatics written by Rémi A. van Compernolle and published by Multilingual Matters. This book was released on 2014-02-05 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the AAAL First Book Award 2017! This book outlines a framework for teaching second language pragmatics grounded in Vygotskian sociocultural psychology. The framework focuses on the appropriation of sociopragmatic concepts as psychological tools that mediate pragmalinguistic choices. Using multiple sources of metalinguistic and performance data collected during a six-week pedagogical enrichment program involving one-on-one tutoring sessions, the volume explores both theoretical and practical issues relevant to teaching second language pragmatics from a Vygotskian perspective. The book represents an important contribution to second language instructional pragmatics research as well as to second language sociocultural psychology scholarship. It will be of interest to all those researching in this field and to language teachers who will find the pedagogical recommendations useful.

Book Interactional Competences in Institutional Settings

Download or read book Interactional Competences in Institutional Settings written by Simona Pekarek Doehler and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-04-17 with total page 293 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This interdisciplinary volume brings together leading scholars from several disciplines to uncover the key to young people’s socialization within institutional settings, from school to the workplace. Among the questions they consider are: what aspects of interactional competence are relevant for participation in practical activities within those settings? What are the interactional procedures through which diverse facets of interactional competence are recognized, legitimized and assessed in the course of practical activities? How do these procedures shape and reflect social institutions and people's understanding of them? The collection discusses interactional competences across a variety of institutional settings, and reflects on the institutional order by scrutinizing how such competences are interactionally treated within everyday institutional practices. The volume enriches an interdisciplinary understanding of fundamental concepts in the social sciences and will therefore be of interest to those working within linguistics, sociology, education, psychology of work, and speech therapy.

It then describes a range of methodological approaches, procedures and techniques for teaching conversation in English. On this basis, an integrated approach to the teaching of conversation is provided, along with practical classroom applications.

Book Second Language Interaction

Download or read book Second Language Interaction written by Salla Kurhila and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2006-01-01 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Members of divergent societies are increasingly involved in interactional situations, both publicly and privately, where participants do not share linguistic resources. Second language conversations have become common everyday events in the globalized world, and an interest has evolved to determine how interaction is conducted and understanding achieved in such asymmetric conversations. This book describes how mutual intelligibility is established, checked and remedied in authentic interaction between first and second language speakers, both in institutional and everyday situations. The study is rooted in the interactional view on language, and it contributes to our knowledge on interactional practices, in particular in cases where some doubt exists about the level of intersubjectivity between the participants. It expands the traditional research agenda of conversation analysis that is based on the concepts of 'membership' and 'members' shared competences'. By showing in detail how speakers with restricted linguistic resources can interact successfully and achieve the (institutional) goals of interactions, this study also adds to our knowledge of the questions that are central in second language research, such as when and how the non-native speakers' 'linguistic output' is modified by themselves or by the native speakers, or when the non-native speakers display uptake after these modifications.
