Book L Ib rie Chr tienne et le Maghreb XIIe XVe Si cles

Download or read book L Ib rie Chr tienne et le Maghreb XIIe XVe Si cles written by Charles_Emmanuell Dufourcq and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-10-28 with total page 349 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The late Ch.-E. Dufourcq was one of the first to map out the relations between the Christian and Muslim coastlands of the medieval western Mediterranean. These studies reveal the extent of the contribution he made to the subject, and the care and attention with which he handled the scattered documentary sources. There are three main themes to the volume: one group of articles focuses on the political and diplomatic aspects of the relations between Spain (Catalonia in particular) and the Maghreb (the lands of the modern Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia); a second is concerned more with commercial contacts and with a comparison of the economic conditions north and south of the Mediterranean, and with the day-to-day life of the sailors and merchants who formed the link between the two. A third theme, most prominent in the final articles, is the social and economic history of Catalonia itself, a subject to which he returned in the final years of his life.

Book Orality and Performance in Early French Romance

Download or read book Orality and Performance in Early French Romance written by Evelyn Birge Vitz and published by Boydell & Brewer. This book was released on 1999 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book proposes a fundamental revision of the history of early French romance: it argues that oral and performed traditions were far more important in the development of romance than scholars have recognised. Starting with issues of orality and literacy, it is argued that the form in which romances were composed was not the invention of clerics but was, rather, an oral form. The second part of the book looks at performance, and shows that romances such as those of Chretien invited voiced presentation; moreover, they were frequently recited from memory, sung, and acted out in dramatic fashion. Romances can, and should, still be performed today.

Book The Economic Decline of the Family

Download or read book The Economic Decline of the Family written by Darek Klonowski and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2021-12-14 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: International evidence points to a widespread decline in the economic standard of living for the family. This trend is reinforced by a number of underlying tendencies, including stagnating wages, the rise of unemployment, weak labor participation, poor housing affordability, limited saving, and skyrocketing personal debt. These realities are also affecting young adults, who, in a historically unprecedented trend, are likely to be worse off than their parents. This book identifies the reason for these trends, and argues that the answer lies in the context of five key deformations that affect the family. Firstly, the family is negatively influenced by liberalism. While one form of liberalism infects society through economic means, the other affects society through civil means. Secondly, liberal economic ideologies and theories have proved to be destructive to the family. Thirdly, the book challenges the notion that political shifts are beneficial to the family’s economic wellbeing. Fourthly, the pursuit of materialistic possessions, money, and wealth, which are supposed to bring the family joy, instead sow the seeds of familial destruction. Lastly, debt is proven to be the silent assassin of human happiness, marital and familial relations, and physical and mental health.

Book The Shawinigan Fox How Jean Chr tien Defied the Elites and Reshaped Canada

Download or read book The Shawinigan Fox How Jean Chr tien Defied the Elites and Reshaped Canada written by Bob Plamondon and published by eBookIt.com. This book was released on 2017-10-18 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jean Chrétien's critics have said he was a man with no vision and a short attention span – a small-town hick who stumbled his way to become Canada's 20th prime minister. Whatever credit the Chrétien government deserved was often given to Paul Martin, the heir apparent who was touted to be the brains behind the operation. But while Chretien was the subject of ridicule, he was quietly giving his competitors – both inside and outside of the Liberal party – a master class in politics, leadership and nation-building. His decisions, which often ran counter to elite opinion, fundamentally reshaped and strengthened Canada as it entered the 21st century. Chrétien restored sanity to government finances, kept Canada out of the Iraq war, turned a brain drain into a brain gain, and established clarity over national unity. Relying on new evidence, detailed analysis and exclusive interviews with former cabinet ministers, provincial premiers, political staff, strategists, and high-ranking bureaucrats – many of them speaking publicly for the first time – bestselling author and historian Bob Plamondon tells the surprising inside story of the Chretien years, including: what Chretien would have done if the 1995 referendum had ended in a vote for separation; why Paul Martin secretly threatened to resign in 1995, seven years before he actually quit; who tried to convince Chretien to join the Iraq war and why he could not be intimidated into joining the US-led coalition; why a lifelong Liberal was the most conservative prime minister in Canadian history; the shocking details of the Chretien-Martin feud and the only time an elected Canadian prime minister has been overthrown Until now, the story of Chretien's time as prime minister has been largely misunderstood. Plamondon sets the record straight and provides compelling lessons about political leadership and problem-solving from a critical chapter in Canadian history.
