Book La Cit de Dieu de saint Augustin traduite par Raoul de Presles 1371 1375

Download or read book La Cit de Dieu de saint Augustin traduite par Raoul de Presles 1371 1375 written by Olivier Bertrand and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-01 with total page 480 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book The Romance of the Rose and the Making of Fourteenth Century English Literature

Download or read book The Romance of the Rose and the Making of Fourteenth Century English Literature written by Philip Knox and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2022-02-17 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Romance of the Rose had a transformative effect on the multilingual literary culture of fourteenth-century England, leaving more material evidence for late medieval English-speaking readers than any other vernacular literary work from mainland Europe. This book examines its decisive effect on English literature of the fourteenth century, and new literary experiments it provoked from writers such as Geoffrey Chaucer, John Gower, William Langland, and the author of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight. Linking the English afterlife of the Rose to a host of ongoing cultural developments in mainland Europe, The Romance of the Rose and the Making of Fourteenth-Century English Literature reveals the deep interconnectedness of English and European literary culture. Examining courtly, clerical, and classicising orientations towards the text, it presents new arguments for the place of the Rose at the centre of fourteenth-century English literature, and explores its rich manuscript history to reveal new evidence about the cultural significance of this love allegory from thirteenth-century France. The chapters avoid an author-centred approach, arranging readings of the Rose and its relation with English literature in constellations that reveal complex unfolding inter-relation of the diverse readings of the Rose that took place in fourteenth-century England.

Book The Theory and Practice of Translation in the Middle Ages

Download or read book The Theory and Practice of Translation in the Middle Ages written by Rosalynn Voaden and published by Brepols Publishers. This book was released on 2003 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The interest of the writers of these essays in the intricacies and implications of translation in the Middle Ages, or of the translation of medieval texts in te modern period, has resulted in a diverse and intellectually stimulating volume. The papers in this volume, written in either English, French, or Spanish, approach translation from a wide variety of perspectives and offer a range of interpretations of the concept of translation. The volume contains essays ranging in time from the Anglo Saxon period to the present, and in topic from medieval recipe books to arguments in favour of women administering the sacrament. Languages studied include non-European languages as well as Latin and numerous European vernaculars as both source and target languages. As any translator or student of translation quickly becomes aware, it is impossible to divorce language from culture. All the contributors to this volume struggle with the complexities of translation as a cultural act, even when the focus would seem to be specifically linguistic. It is these complexities which lend the study of the theory and practice of translation in the Middle Ages its enduring fascinatio

Book The Writer s Gift or the Patron s Pleasure

Download or read book The Writer s Gift or the Patron s Pleasure written by Deborah McGrady and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2019-01-02 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Writer’s Gift or the Patron’s Pleasure? introduces a new approach to literary patronage through a reassessment of the medieval paragon of literary sponsorship, Charles V of France. Traditionally celebrated for his book commissions that promoted the vernacular, Charles V also deserves credit for having profoundly altered the literary economy when bypassing the traditional system of acquiring books through gifting to favor the commission. When upturning literary dynamics by soliciting works to satisfy his stated desires, the king triggered a multi-generational literary debate concerned with the effect a work’s status as a solicited or unsolicited text had in determining the value and purpose of the literary enterprise. Treating first the king's commissioned writers and then canonical French late medieval authors, Deborah McGrady argues that continued discussion of these competing literary economies engendered the concept of the “writer’s gift,” which vernacular writers used to claim a distinctive role in society based on their triple gift of knowledge, wisdom, and literary talent.
