Book excerpt: La sigillata africana è una classe di ceramica fine, da mensa, di qualità più o meno raffinata, coperta interamente o in parte da vernice di colore rosso-arancione, più o meno liscia e brillante, che, decorata in vario modo, ha ampia diffusione dal I al VIII sec. d.C. in tutto il Mediterraneo e soprattutto lungo le aree costiere. I materiali africani sono veicolati per mare e ritenuti "merce di accompagnamento" delle anfore e del loro contenuto (l'olio africano). La sigillata africana C proviene dalla regione della Bizacena della Tunisia centro-orientale e si diffonde sporadicamente all'inizio del III sec. d.C. per essere poi sostituita dalla produzione in sigillata D. Tra la fine del III e gli inizi del IV secolo d.C. si assiste ad una ripresa delle officine della Tunisia settentrionale intorno all'area dell'antica Cartagine, che coincide con il maggior sviluppo della produzione in sigillata africana D tanto che proprio in questo momento si registra la massima diffusione della cultura figurativa africana nel Mediterraneo occidentale. A partire dalla seconda metà del IV sec. d.C. però, comincia un primo periodo di decadenza che porta, dapprima, ad una provincializzazione delle produzioni e, poi, ad un loro lento e costante declino a favore di forme di qualità, argilla e vernice sempre più scadenti. La classe dimostra una certa standardizzazione dei tipi e dunque l'esistenza di una tradizione ben consolidata, testimoniata dall'elevatissimo numero di produzioni. La dominazione vandala sembra comportare un declino delle esportazioni verso l'Oriente, dove la sigillata D è sostituita dalle ceramiche pergamene e cipriote mentre in Italia Meridionale la diffusione di tale ceramica riprende con la riconquista bizantina. La sua definitiva scomparsa si deve invece all'invasione araba dell'Africa (647-698 d.C.) che comporta la rottura dell'asse Cartagine-Costantinopoli e, di fatto, interrompe l'esportazione della classe.

The volume explores specifically the time frame from the fall of the Roman empire to the Medieval period. A first group of papers covers islands and island groups in the Central and Western Mediterranean, including the Balearic Islands, Corsica, Sardinia, Sicily, and the Adriatic islands. Together, these five papers highlight several common themes across the region: local or indigenous sites were often reoccupied in Late Antiquity, the rural countryside typically played a significant role in the contributions of islands to wider Mediterranean economic networks, and islands – big and small – often played significant roles in shifting political and religious power. The second group focuses on the Eastern Mediterranean. Three papers cover a range of islands, including Crete, the Cyclades, and Cyprus. Together they emphasize the impacts external shifts in political power and economic ties in the Eastern Mediterranean had on island landscapes, as well as the connected relationship between sacred space and territorial occupation across many of these islands. The final group of papers pivots on changing perceptions of island landscapes in Late Antiquity—or “island mindscapes.” Three papers focus on how communities adapted as they underwent Christianization in island contexts, emphasizing the diverse and varied ways that island landscapes became “Christianized,” as well as how other political and economic factors shaped the dynamics of change.

Focusing on the ancient polis of Kale Akte (Caronia) and the surrounding Nebrodi area on the north coast of Sicily, the book examines the city’s archaeology and history from a broad geographical and cultural viewpoint, suggesting that Kale Akte may have had a greater economic importance for Sicily and the wider Mediterranean world than its size and lowly political status would suggest. Also discussed is the gradual population shift away from the hill-top down to a growing harbour settlement at Caronia Marina, at the foot of the rock. The book is particularly important for the comprehensive analysis of the 1999–2004 excavations at the latter, with fresh interpretations of the function of the buildings excavated and their chronology, as well for reviewing the present state of our knowledge about Kale Acte/Calacte, and defining research questions for the future. The archaeological material at the heart of this study comes from excavations at the site conducted by the author. It is one of the few detailed publications from Sicily of Hellenistic and Roman amphora material. The conclusions about changing trends of commercial production and exchange will be of interest to those working on ceramic material elsewhere in Sicily and indeed further afield. The study also offers a fresh perspective of the economic history of ancient Sicily, and concludes that Kale Akte’s privileged location on the north coast was well suited for the export trade to Italy and the city of Rome itself, which enabled the Sicilian town to prosper during the Roman Empire. The origins of Kale Akte and its alleged foundation by the exiled Sikel leader, Ducetius, in the fifth century BC, are also discussed in the light of the latest archaeological discoveries.
