Book El Inmortal

  • Author : Sebastián Salado
  • Publisher : Palibrio
  • Release : 2012-07
  • ISBN : 1463318278
  • Pages : 369 pages

Download or read book El Inmortal written by Sebastián Salado and published by Palibrio. This book was released on 2012-07 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Esther in Early Modern Iberia and the Sephardic Diaspora

Download or read book Esther in Early Modern Iberia and the Sephardic Diaspora written by Emily Colbert Cairns and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-07-13 with total page 195 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores Queen Esther as an idealized woman in Iberia, as well as a Jewish heroine for conversos in the Sephardic Diaspora in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. The biblical Esther --the Jewish woman who marries the King of Persia and saves her people -- was contested in the cultures of early modern Europe, authored as a symbol of conformity as well as resistance. At once a queen and minority figure under threat, for a changing Iberian and broader European landscape, Esther was compelling and relatable precisely because of her hybridity. She was an early modern globetrotter and border transgressor. Emily Colbert Cairns analyzes the many retellings of the biblical heroine that were composed in a turbulent early modern Europe. These narratives reveal national undercurrents where religious identity was transitional and fluid, thus problematizing the fixed notion of national identity within a particular geographic location. This volume instead proposes a model of a Sephardic nationality that existed beyond geographical borders.

Book excerpt: Lao Tzu, the legendary author of the Tao Te Ching , is also credited with the authorship of the Hua Hu Ching , which embodies some of his later teachings. During a time of political turmoil in the fourteenth century, all copies of this work were banned and ordered to be burned. Thus, few if any complete and accurate manuscripts exist today. Fortunately, the complete teachings of the Hua Hu Ching have been preserved through the oral transmission of generation after generation of Taoist masters to their disciples. In this book, Master Ni, heir to that orally transmitted wisdom, offers a superlative rendering of this reassured teaching.

Book Cristianismo Crimen de Lesa Humanidad

Download or read book Cristianismo Crimen de Lesa Humanidad written by Cesar Octavio Pedraza LóPez and published by Palibrio. This book was released on 2012-02 with total page 149 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book A Tale Blazed Through Heaven

Download or read book A Tale Blazed Through Heaven written by Oliver James Noble Wood and published by Oxford Modern Languages & Lite. This book was released on 2014 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Tale Blazed Through Heaven examines developments in the representation of the classical tale of Mars, Venus, and Vulcan in the literature and painting of the Golden Age of Spain (c.1526-1681). Anchored in close analysis of individual primary texts, the five chapters that comprise this study assess how poets and painters breathed new life into the tale inherited from Homer, Ovid, and others, examining some of the ways in which the story of Mars, Venus, and Vulcan was disguised, developed, expanded, mocked, combined with or played off against different subjects, or otherwise modified in order to pique the interest of successive generations of readers and viewers. Each chapter discusses what particular changes and shifts in emphasis reveal about the tale itself, specific renderings, the aims and intentions of individual poets and painters, and the wider context of the literary and visual culture of Early Modern Spain. Discussing a range of poems by both canonical (Garcilaso de la Vega, Luis de Gongora, Lope de Vega, etc.) and less well-known writers (Juan de la Cueva, Alonso de Castillo Solorzano, Salvador Jacinto Polo de Medina, etc.), and culminating in detailed examination of select mythological works by Philip IV's court painter, Diego Velazquez, this book sheds light on questions relating to aspects of classical reception in the Renaissance, the rise of specific poetic styles (epic, mock-epic, burlesque, etc.), the interplay between the sister arts of poetry and painting, and the continual process of imitation and invention that was one of the defining features of the Spanish Golden Age.
