Book La Bataille de l Atlantique 1939 1945

Download or read book La Bataille de l Atlantique 1939 1945 written by Léonce Peillard and published by FeniXX. This book was released on 1986-12-31T23:00:00+01:00 with total page 593 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Naval Officers Under Hitler

Download or read book Naval Officers Under Hitler written by Eric C Rust and published by Naval Institute Press. This book was released on 2017-11-15 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a collective biography of the 318 men who joined the German Navy in 1934 to become officers. It traces their lives from their upbringing in the Weimar Republic through their post-war careers. Unique in its subject matter and methodology in both German and international military historiography, Naval Officers under Hitler is a professional, political, and psychological group portrait based on personal interviews and correspondence as well as archival research. It stresses the drama of recent German history that these officers experienced closely as observers, participants, victims, and sometimes, beneficiaries. The author argues that the vast majority of junior naval officers under Hitler, while well trained and prepared to defend their fatherland as good patriots, felt no profound or lasting attachment to Nazi ideology. Instead, their ideological preferences remained with patriotic, conservative groups such as the German National People's Party and its successor organizations after World War II. Otherwise love of the sea and of the naval profession lay at the center of their overall worldview and priorities.

Download or read book Science and the Pacific War written by Roy M. MacLeod and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1999-12-31 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1995, the fiftieth anniversary of the end of the Second World War occasioned many reflections on the place of science and technology in the conflict. That the war ended with Allied victory in the Pacific theatre, inevitably focussed attention upon the Pacific region, and particularly upon the Manhattan project and its outcome. It was in the Pacific that Western physics and engineering gave birth to the Atomic Age. However, the Pacific war had also proved a testing time, and a testing space, for other disciplines and institutions. Extreme environments and opemtional distances, and the fundamental demands of logistics, required the Allies and the Japanese to innovate many scientific and technological practices. Just as medicine and botany were called upon to fight tropical diseases and insect pests, so engineers, anthropol ogists and geographers were called upon to understand local conditions and cli mates, and to work with local peoples whose traditional lives were changed forever by the experience. At the same time, the war played midwife to a host of new de velopments, not least in scientific intelligence and in chemical and biological weapons, which were to acquire far greater importance after 1945.

Book The Canadian Naval Chronicle 1939 1945

Download or read book The Canadian Naval Chronicle 1939 1945 written by Robert A. Darlington and published by St. Catharines, Ont. : Vanwell Pub.. This book was released on 1998 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In World War II the Canadian Navy embarked on a five-year anti-submarine offensive with a tiny fleet of six destroyers and a navy largely untrained in submarine warfare. This chronicle of ship successes and losses charts the increase in fighting capability of the Canadian naval forces and their growing success against enemy submarines and surface warships. From the dreadful loss of sixteen ships out of a single convoy in 1941, to the painstaking teamwork of hunting down and destroying an asdic contact a few years later, the authors have managed to capture the drama of these events in considerable detail. The information provided in each account represents comprehensive research into the incident from available records and from personal recollections and interviews collected by the authors. Each includes the ships and crews involved on both sides, their movements just prior to the event, the action itself, the casualty lists, and the medals awarded as a result of the action. This book also contains, for the first time, a complete record of all the Canadian owned Merchant ships lost, as well as a table of RCAF Squadron successes against enemy U-boats. --

Book The Submariner s Dictionary Or Submariner s Compendium of Terms Tar s Handbook of Naval Verbiage and Retired Guy s Re familiarization Manual

Download or read book The Submariner s Dictionary Or Submariner s Compendium of Terms Tar s Handbook of Naval Verbiage and Retired Guy s Re familiarization Manual written by Ron Martini and published by Ron Martini. This book was released on 2005 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Submariners are a tight knit group of men bound together by training and experience, and with a language all their own. That language is perhaps a little vulgar, but never intentionally demeaning, and a little irreverent but still worldly. This work is an attempt to preserve and explain some of these curious guys who so proudly wear a shiny metal pin that looks like a strange pair of fish on their left breast. This process of accumulating this new language begins in Boot Camp, and is added to with every change of duty station the sailor undergoes. It is heard aboard the boats and, unknowingly, by family members who can't understand terms like head, deck, and overhead, and who think SOS is a distress signal.
