Book After Net Neutrality

Download or read book After Net Neutrality written by Victor Pickard and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2019-10-29 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A provocative analysis of net neutrality and a call to democratize online communication This short book is both a primer that explains the history and politics of net neutrality and an argument for a more equitable framework for regulating access to the internet. Pickard and Berman argue that we should not see internet service as a commodity but as a public good necessary for sustaining democratic society in the twenty-first century. They aim to reframe the threat to net neutrality as more than a conflict between digital leviathans like Google and internet service providers like Comcast but as part of a much wider project to commercialize the public sphere and undermine the free speech essential for democracy. Readers will come away with a better understanding of the key concepts underpinning the net neutrality battle and rallying points for future action to democratize online communication.

  • Publisher : OUP Oxford

  • ISBN : 0191606030
  • Pages : 842 pages

Download or read book Capital written by Karl Marx and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 1999-09-02 with total page 842 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A classic of early modernism, Capital combines vivid historical detail with economic analysis to produce a bitter denunciation of mid-Victorian capitalist society. It has also proved to be the most influential work in social science in the twentieth century; Marx did for social science what Darwin had done for biology. Millions of readers this century have treated Capital as a sacred text, subjecting it to as many different interpretations as the bible itself. No mere work of dry economics, Marx's great work depicts the unfolding of industrial capitalism as a tragic drama - with a message which has lost none of its relevance today. This is the only abridged edition to take account of the whole of Capital. It offers virtually all of Volume 1, which Marx himself published in 1867, excerpts from a new translation of `The Result of the Immediate Process of Production', and a selection of key chapters from Volume 3, which Engels published in 1895. ABOUT THE SERIES: For over 100 years Oxford World's Classics has made available the widest range of literature from around the globe. Each affordable volume reflects Oxford's commitment to scholarship, providing the most accurate text plus a wealth of other valuable features, including expert introductions by leading authorities, helpful notes to clarify the text, up-to-date bibliographies for further study, and much more.

  • Author : Marko Živković
  • Publisher : Indiana University Press
  • Release : 2011-04-29
  • ISBN : 0253223067
  • Pages : 336 pages

Download or read book Serbian Dreambook written by Marko Živković and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2011-04-29 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The central role that the regime of Slobodan Milošević played in the bloody dissolution of Yugoslavia is well known, but Marko Živković explores another side of this time period: the stories people in Serbia were telling themselves (and others) about themselves. Živković traces the recurring themes, scripts, and narratives that permeated public discourse in Milošević's Serbia, as Serbs described themselves as Gypsies or Jews, violent highlanders or peaceful lowlanders, and invoked their own mythologized defeat at the Battle of Kosovo. The author investigates national narratives, the use of tradition for political purposes, and local idioms, paying special attention to the often bizarre and outlandish tropes people employed to make sense of their social reality. He suggests that the enchantments of political life under Milošević may be fruitfully seen as a dreambook of Serbian national imaginary.

Book Advances in Cognitive Translation Studies

Download or read book Advances in Cognitive Translation Studies written by Ricardo Muñoz Martín and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-11-18 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents the latest theoretical and empirical advances in cognitive translation studies. It involves the modes of written translation, interpreting, sight translation, and computer-aided translation. In separate chapters, this book proposes a new analytical framework for studying keylogged translation processes, a framework that reconciles a sociological and a psychological approach for studying expertise in translation, and a pedagogical model of translation competence. It expands the investigation of cognitive processes by considering the role of emotional factors, reviews, and develops the effort models of interpreting as a didactic construct. The empirical studies in this book revolve around cognitive load and effort; they explore the influences of text factors (e.g., metaphors, complex lexical items, directionality) while taking into account translator factors and evaluate the user experience of computer-aided translation tools.

This book was released on 2009 with total page 39 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Occupational therapy practitioners and other clinicians understand the importance of accurately evaluating a client’s ability to accomplish necessary everyday tasks, especially those in the community setting. The Test of Grocery Shopping Skills is a new performance-based assessment that measures how accurately and efficiently clients can locate items in a grocery store. Developed primarily to assess individuals with serious mental illness, this assessment also is ideal for use with other populations in which cognitive impairments could interfere with community living skills, such as persons with brain injury, stroke, dementia, or developmental disabilities. The manual clearly discusses how to administer the test and to score and interpret results. Two different but statistically comparable pre- and post-test forms allow practitioners to measure changes in clients’ abilities. This user-friendly assessment also includes instructions for the test administrator and test taker, score sheets, grocery lists, and a sample store map and answer sheet—all of which are available on the enclosed CD-ROM for easy use with clients and also in the classroom.
