Book Desmitificaci N de Dogmas y Devociones Cat Licos en Cien a Os de Soledad

Download or read book Desmitificaci N de Dogmas y Devociones Cat Licos en Cien a Os de Soledad written by Ernesto Garc a. Uranga and published by Palibrio. This book was released on 2012-08 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book The Book of Prayer of Sor Mar a of Santo Domingo

Download or read book The Book of Prayer of Sor Mar a of Santo Domingo written by Mary E. Giles and published by SUNY Press. This book was released on 1990-07-05 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The history of women's spirituality and Christian mysticism demonstrates that women have been influential religious leaders even without benefit of priestly ordination and theological training. St. Catherine of Siena and St. Teresa of Avila are examples of women with visionary gifts of tremendous power. A less well-known Spanish visionary is Sor María of Santo Domingo, a Dominican tertiary of peasant lineage who became so famous for her raptures, austerities, and prophecies that the king, a cardinal, and nobles considered her a living saint. In 1948 research in the archives of the University of Zaragoza uncovered The Book of Prayer of Sor María of Santo Domingo (originally published around 1518) which had gone unnoticed for centuries. The text includes some of Sor María's ecstatic utterances and representations, and is a first-hand look at a women who in many ways is as representative of the early years of sixteenth century Spain as St. Teresa was of the later years. Giles' book provides the first English translation of this text as well as a study of Sor María and the issues that pushed her into the limelight.

Book Mary and the Fathers of the Church

Download or read book Mary and the Fathers of the Church written by Luigi Gambero and published by Ignatius Press. This book was released on 2019-10-23 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Father Luigi Gambero, internationally-known expert on early Christianity, presents a comprehensive survey of the development of Marian doctrine and devotion during the first eight centuries. Focusing on the lives and works of over thirty of the most famous Church Fathers and early Christian writers, Fr. Gambero has produced a clear and readable summary of the richness of the patristic age's theological and devotional approach to the Mother of God. The book contains numerous citations from the works of those men who developed the defining Christological and Mariological positions that have constituted the foundational doctrinal teaching of the Church. Each chapter concludes with an extended reading from the works of the patristic authors. A number of these texts have never before been published in English. The thought of the Fathers and early Christian writers continues to fascinate readers today. Their theological acuity and spiritual depth led them faithfully into the mysteries of Sacred Scripture. Their vast experience made them reliable and trustworthy witnesses to the faith of the people of God.

Book The Evangelical Rhetoric of Ramon Llull

Download or read book The Evangelical Rhetoric of Ramon Llull written by Mark D. Johnston and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1996-02-29 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ramon Llull (1232-1316), born on Majorca, was one of the most remarkable lay intellectuals of the thirteenth century. He devoted much of his life to promoting missions among unbelievers, the reform of Western Christian society, and personal spiritual perfection. He wrote over 200 philosophical and theological works in Catalan, Latin, and Arabic. Many of these expound on his "Great Universal Art of Finding Truth," an idiosyncratic dialectical system that he thought capable of proving Catholic beliefs to non-believers. This study offers the first full-length analysis of his theories about rhetoric and preaching, which were central to his evangelizing activities. It explains how Llull attempted to synthesize commonplace advice about courtly speech and techniques of popular sermons into a single program for secular and sacred eloquence that would necessarily promote love of God and neighbor. Llull's work is a remarkable testimony to the diffusion of clerical culture among educated lay-people of his era, and to their enthusiasm for applying that knowledge in pursuit of learning and piety. This book should find a place on the shelf of every scholar of medieval history, religion, and rhetoric.
