Book Dialogue on Poetry and Literary Aphorisms

Download or read book Dialogue on Poetry and Literary Aphorisms written by Friedrich von Schlegel and published by . This book was released on 1968 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Dialogue on Poetry is one of the most important of Schlegel's critical and philosophical writings. Modeled on Plato's Symposium, it comprises eulogies on poetry delivered by participants in a fictitious conversation, who represent the historical figures of the German Romantic School. Thus the Dialogue expounds the main critical ideas of German Romanticism and simultaneously provides a panorama of the early Romantic Movement. Schlegel was the leading critical thinker of the German Romanticists. His importance for the theory of Romantic poetry and the history of criticism becomes increasingly obvious with the growing interest in Romanticism. René Welleck called Schlegel "one of the greatest critics of history"; George Lukacs based his theory of the novel on Schlegel's ideas; and Ernest Robert Curtius said about Schlegel's position within the history of literary criticism: "In Germany we have Friedrich Schlegel--and beginnings." This first English edition of Dialogue on Poetry, which also contains a carefully chosen selection of Schlegel's poetic aphorisms, affords scholars and students in the field of Philosophy and in Comparative, General, and German Literature a new avenue of approach to European Romanticism.

Book The Twilight of the Avant garde

Download or read book The Twilight of the Avant garde written by Jonathan Mayhew and published by Liverpool University Press. This book was released on 2009-01-01 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Twilight of the Avant-Garde addresses the central problem of contemporary Spanish poetry: the attempt to preserve the scope and ambition of modernist poetry at the end of the twentieth century. Offering a critical analysis of Luis Garcìa Montero’s “poetry of experience,” and the work of José Angel Valente and Antonio Gamoneda, among others, Mayhew challenges received notions about the value of poetic language in relation to the society and culture at large. Ultimately championing the survival of more challenging and ambitious modes of poetic writing in the postmodern age, this volume argues that the cultural ambition of modernist poetics remains alive and well in our age of cynicism.

Book Complete poetry

Download or read book Complete poetry written by Federico García Lorca and published by Vintage Espanol. This book was released on 2012-11-13 with total page 610 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. ENGLISH DESCRIPTION The complete poetic work of one of the most influential writers in Spanish literature. The figure of Federico García Lorca encompasses, both in Spain and abroad, much more than his literature. His poetry, translated into countless languages, travels through landscapes, delves into traditions and denounces injustices with the skill of a writer who used the pen like few others, and his books continue to be read by multiple generations. In this dazzling collection, the reader will be able to go through the entire stretch of his poetic work: starting with the young Lorca in Book of Poems, Songs and Theory and Play of the Duende, passing through Lorca classics such as Gypsy Ballads, Poem of the Deep Song, the impressive poem Poet in New York, as well as Lament for Ignacio Sánchez Mejías, among many others. This edition and its prologues give the reader the necessary tools to understand and contextualize the author, to get closer to the complexity of his work and to enjoy, in a single volume, one of the most relevant Spanish authors of the 20th century.
