Book La Acreditaci N de la Educaci N Superior en Iberoam Rica

Download or read book La Acreditaci N de la Educaci N Superior en Iberoam Rica written by V. Ctor Manuel Rosario Mu Oz and published by Palibrio. This book was released on 2012-10 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Inequality Innovation and Reform in Higher Education

Download or read book Inequality Innovation and Reform in Higher Education written by Maria Slowey and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-04-10 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An important backdrop to the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals involves consideration of the impact of a ‘new demographics’ derived from the interaction of two global developments. First, high levels of internal and cross-border mass migration, stimulated by climate change, violence and disparities in wealth and social stability within and between different countries and the global South and North. Second, the phenomenon of increasing longevity and rapidly ageing populations, especially in the developed world. This book explores the central role that socially engaged higher education might potentially play in helping address these challenges, enhancing lifelong learning opportunities and facilitating more positive outcomes for both individuals and societies. The contributors to this book are scholars of higher education and lifelong learning based in twelve countries from Europe (Germany, Ireland, Slovenia, Sweden and the United Kingdom), the Americas (Brazil, Canada, Mexico and the USA), Japan, Australia and New Zealand. “This is an extremely timely and important collection focusing on growing migration and an increase in ageing populations, two major social trends that researchers in higher education often overlook. The multi-level analysis of the role that higher education can play, together with the contributions from 12 countries in the North and South make this one of the most outstanding collections on these themes.” Rajani Naidoo, Director, International Centre for HE Management, University of Bath. “Auguste Comte famously observed that demography is destiny. This superb volume examines the powerful impact of two global demographic trends, and the vital role universities can play in responding to them. The book describes a range of innovative and pragmatic responses, while deepening our understanding of why serving these populations it so important for the health of our communities and our democracies.” Matthew Hartley, Professor and Associate Dean, GSE, University of Pennsylvania. “The powerful synergy of the longevity revolution and the technology revolution necessitates a corresponding education revolution. It is clear that the educational assets acquired in youth and early adulthood no longer provide sufficient currency for longer, big change impacted lives. This timely book examines the benefits of creating an inclusive, rights-based culture of learning at every stage of life.” Alexandre Kalache, Co-President, International Longevity Centre (ILC) Global Alliance and ILC Brazil. “How can we understand the current dynamics of migrations and demographic trends to adapt HE access policies accordingly? By bringing together empirical research in different countries, this book offers an essential insight on this very sensitive issue for both individuals and their societies. A must read for researchers and policy makers.” Gaële Goastellec, Professor of Sociology, University of Lausanne, Chair of the Consortium of Higher Education Researchers. “The contributions cover an admirably wide range of countries, shedding different lights on these common themes. The book sets a challenging and informed agenda which policy-makers and institutional leaders would do well to take seriously.” Tom Schuller, Formerly Head of the Centre for Educational Research and Innovation, OECD.

Book Academic Freedom in Higher Education

Download or read book Academic Freedom in Higher Education written by Maria Slowey and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-07-12 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This timely book explores the challenges facing universities and individual scholars through an examination of the history and theory underlying the concept of academic freedom. Freedom of speech is widely viewed as a central attribute of contemporary liberal democracies and within limits — differing opinions can be articulated in public without fear of reprisal. Academic freedom, long regarded as central to the idea of the university is, on the other hand, a right which must be earned through the acquisition of expert knowledge and the application of intellectual rigor in teaching and research. Both hard-won freedoms are argued by many to be under serious threat. The expert contributors to this book, from different global regions, examine both the importance of academic freedom and the severe threats universities face in this context in the twenty-first century. With its interdisciplinary perspective and cross-national emphasis, central issues in this text are illustrated through detailed examination of case studies and consideration of wider developments in the academy. Adopting a longue duree approach, rather than discussing the details of fast moving, controversies, the analyses offer insights for an educated public about an issue of pressing, contemporary significance. This book will be of interest to researchers, policy makers, staff and students across higher education and to members of the general public, who are concerned about these important and contested matters.

Book The University System and Economic Development in Mexico Since 1929

Download or read book The University System and Economic Development in Mexico Since 1929 written by David Lorey and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 1993-11-01 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For decades, Mexican leaders and scholars as well as outside observers have spoken of a Mexican university system in crisis, expressing concern over student political activism and violence, declining quality of instruction and facilities, crowded campuses, and lack of employment for graduates. When the government harshly suppressed a student movement in 1968, world attention focused on the turmoil that was endemic in university life. During the severe economic slump of the 1980s, the fundamental weaknesses of the Mexican economy—its inefficiency and inability to compete in the world—were often attributed to failings of the university system. Using original quantitative data on the graduates of all Mexican universities in a dozen major professional fields since 1929, the author explores the nature of this purported "crisis" by examining a series of questions about the Mexican university system: How have the changing policy priorities of the Mexican government affected the university’s education of professionals? How have the Mexican economy’s needs for professionals shaped the functioning of the university system? Has Mexico trained "enough" professionals? Have they been trained in the "right" fields? Has the university been able to respond to demands for upward mobility through higher education? The author’s detailed analysis reveals a paradox: to the extent that Mexican universities may not be producing the kinds of expertise needed for competing in the new global marketplace, that educational quality has declined gradually over time, and that the university has not contributed much to social mobility, one may indeed speak of a crisis. Yet because the university system has reached its present form in response to demands placed on it be government, the economy, and society, responding pragmatically to circumstances beyond its control, the author concludes that the crisis is not fundamentally a university crisis, but rather one that lies in Mexican economy and society at large.

Book EVALUACI N INSTITUCIONAL BASADA EN LOS SISTEMAS SUAVES

This book was released on 2013-08 with total page 131 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
