Book L2 Acquisition of English Unaccusative Verbs by Native Speakers of Korean

Download or read book L2 Acquisition of English Unaccusative Verbs by Native Speakers of Korean written by Kyae-Sung Park and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 532 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This experimental study explores the learnability problems involved in the acquisition of English unaccusative verbs by Korean L2 learners using a production and two grammaticality judgment tasks. The results showed that learners tended to overpassivize unaccusatives. Due to the poor performance on resultatives and pseudopassives with unergatives, it was found that very few could make the unergative/unaccusative distinction. On the other hand, learners correctly performed on those with unaccusatives, which suggests that they had knowledge of syntactic properties of unaccusativity at D-Structure. Overpassivization errors indicate that L1 transfer occurred at the morphological level, and that learners had an innate knowledge in mapping semantic roles onto syntactic functions. That is, they relied on the canonical mapping, agent to subject and theme to object. In conclusion, although L1 plays a crucial role in the L2 acquisition of English unaccusative verbs by native speakers of Korean, a UG-related mechanism is also involved.

Book New Perspectives on Grammar Teaching in Second Language Classrooms

Download or read book New Perspectives on Grammar Teaching in Second Language Classrooms written by Eli Hinkel and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2001-07-01 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New Perspectives on Grammar Teaching in Second Language Classrooms brings together various approaches to the contextualized teaching of grammar and communicative skills as integrated components of second language instruction. Its purpose is to show from both theoretical and practical perspectives that grammar teaching can be made productive and useful in ESL and EFL classrooms. In this text: *First-rate scholars approach the teaching of grammar from multiple complementary perspectives, providing an original, comprehensive treatment of the topic. *Discourse analysis and research data are used to address such pedagogical areas as grammatical and lexical development in speaking, listening, reading, and writing. *The communicative perspective on ESL and EFL instruction that is presented provides ways for learners to enhance their production skills, whereas the meaning-based grammar instruction can supplement and strengthen current methodology with a communicative focus. This volume is intended as a foundational text for second language grammar pedagogy courses at the advanced undergraduate and master's levels.

Book Bidirectional Transfer and Markedness

Download or read book Bidirectional Transfer and Markedness written by Sunhae Hwang and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Korean NSs would not produce the subject-creating constructions of English. Results showed that the word order hypothesis as confirmed; L1 influence did not appear in either group. The NP modification hypothesis was also confirmed; L1 influence appeared to be bidirectional. The pro-drop hypothesis was partially confirmed; English speakers of Korean employed pro-drop while Korean speakers of English did not. Thus, L1 influence seemed to be unrelated to pro-drop. The hypotheses regarding the topic-comment structures were not confirmed. Contrary to the predictions, both groups of informants produced subject-predicate structures.

Book Roots of language

Download or read book Roots of language written by Derek Bickerton and published by Language Science Press. This book was released on 2016-02-05 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Roots of language was originally published in 1981 by Karoma Press (Ann Arbor). It was the first work to systematically develop a theory first suggested by Coelho in the late nineteenth century: that the creation of creole languages somehow reflected universal properties of language. The book also proposed that the same set of properties would be found to emerge in normal first-language acquisition and must have emerged in the original evolution of language. These proposals, some of which were elaborated in an article in Behavioral and Brain Sciences (1984), were immediately controversial and gave rise to a great deal of subsequent research in creoles, much of it aimed at rebutting the theory. The book also served to legitimize and stimulate research in language evolution, a topic regarded as off-limits by linguists for over a century. The present edition contains a foreword by the author bringing the theory up to date; a fuller exposition of many of its aspects can be found in the author's most recent work, More than nature needs (Harvard University Press, 2014).

Book Advanced Korean

Download or read book Advanced Korean written by Ross King and published by Tuttle Publishing. This book was released on 2015-04-07 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advanced Korean offers a complete, systematic, and streamlined third-year course in Korean. It is ideal for university students and adult learners with plentiful reading texts and written exercises, all in Korean Hangul. Concise Korean grammar notes in English, extensive glossaries, and an answer key make this book suitable for those studying alone, as well as for classroom use. There are 20 comprehensive lessons, each with a reading text in which new language is introduced in context, followed by vocabulary, grammar points, and exercises. Lessons 5, 10, 15 and 20 are short reviews of the key structural patterns introduced. The focus is on written Korean, but the reading texts are not academic, they are breezy, chatty, and amusing, with illustrations. The textbook comes with a downloadable supplement entitled Sino-Korean Companion. It is for those learners wishing to commence the study of Chinese characters as they are used in the Korean language. The 20 lessons build on the content of the lessons in the main textbook to introduce 500 Chinese characters in their Sino-Korean readings. The emphasis is on giving students the tools they need to decipher unfamiliar Chinese characters on their own, and also on Sino-Korean vocabulary acquisition. Each lesson introduces approximately 25-30 new Chinese characters along with related vocabulary items and builds on previous characters and vocabulary introduced, demonstrating the cumulative effect on one's vocabulary of paying systematic attention to Sino-Korean.
