  • Author : Francesco Spampinato

Download or read book Art vs TV written by Francesco Spampinato and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2021-12-02 with total page 535 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While highlighting the prevailing role of television in Western societies, Art vs. TV maps and condenses a comprehensive history of the relationships of art and television. With a particular focus on the link between reality and representation, Francesco Spampinato analyzes video art works, installations, performances, interventions and television programs made by contemporary artists as forms of resistance to and appropriation and parody of mainstream television. The artists discussed belong to different generations: those that emerged in the 1960s in association with art movements such as Pop Art, Fluxus and Happening; and those appearing on the scene in the 1980s, whose work aimed at deconstructing media representation in line with postmodernist theories; to those arriving in the 2000s, an era in which, through reality shows and the Internet, anybody could potentially become a media personality; and finally those active in the 2010s, whose work reflects on how old media like television has definitively vaporized through the electronic highways of cyberspace. These works and phenomena elicit a tension between art and television, exposing an incongruence; an impossibility not only to converge but at the very least to open up a dialogical exchange.

Book An Approximate Solution of the Equations of Motion for Arbitrary Rotating Spacecraft

Download or read book An Approximate Solution of the Equations of Motion for Arbitrary Rotating Spacecraft written by Peter Ralph Kurzhals and published by . This book was released on 1967 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The assumption of small changes in the inertia parameters has been used to derive approximate rotational equations of motion for arbitrary spinning spacecraft in the small angle and rate regime. Complex representations are introduced to define the rate and attitude errors produced by applied disturbances, and analytical solutions are obtained for the steady spinning mode and for the spin-up and despin mode. Solutions for the steady spinning mode consider both the uncontrolled and the controlled spacecraft motion for characteristic disturbance. These disturbances include initial errors, externally applied torques, and instantaneous and periodic mass motions within the spacecraft. The errors induced by the disturbances are described by the error component time histories and by vector traces of the complex error representations. Upper bounds of the errors are developed for the uncontrolled motion, and the required control techniques and control systems are examined for the controlled motion. Solutions for the spin-up and despin mode consider extensible spacecraft modules connected by struts or cables. Fuel consumption relations are derived for several extension techniques, and optimization of the extension techniques is shown to yield appreciable fuel savings. Comparisons of the analytical solutions and exact solutions obtained by numerical integration of the complete equations of motion are found to yield excellent agreement, and the applications of the approximate solution are illustrated for a manned orbital research laboratory and a large spinning space station.

Book The Geometric and Arithmetic Volume of Shimura Varieties of Orthogonal Type

Download or read book The Geometric and Arithmetic Volume of Shimura Varieties of Orthogonal Type written by Fritz Hörmann and published by American Mathematical Society. This book was released on 2014-11-05 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book outlines a functorial theory of integral models of (mixed) Shimura varieties and of their toroidal compactifications, for odd primes of good reduction. This is the integral version, developed in the author's thesis, of the theory invented by Deligne and Pink in the rational case. In addition, the author develops a theory of arithmetic Chern classes of integral automorphic vector bundles with singular metrics using the work of Burgos, Kramer and Kühn. The main application is calculating arithmetic volumes or "heights" of Shimura varieties of orthogonal type using Borcherds' famous modular forms with their striking product formula--an idea due to Bruinier-Burgos-Kühn and Kudla. This should be seen as an Arakelov analogue of the classical calculation of volumes of orthogonal locally symmetric spaces by Siegel and Weil. In the latter theory, the volumes are related to special values of (normalized) Siegel Eisenstein series. In this book, it is proved that the Arakelov analogues are related to special derivatives of such Eisenstein series. This result gives substantial evidence in the direction of Kudla's conjectures in arbitrary dimensions. The validity of the full set of conjectures of Kudla, in turn, would give a conceptual proof and far-reaching generalizations of the work of Gross and Zagier on the Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture. Titles in this series are co-published with the Centre de Recherches Mathématiques.

Book Modern Elementary Particle Physics

Download or read book Modern Elementary Particle Physics written by Gordon Kane and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2017-02-09 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is written for students and scientists wanting to learn about the Standard Model of particle physics. Only an introductory course knowledge about quantum theory is needed. The text provides a pedagogical description of the theory, and incorporates the recent Higgs boson and top quark discoveries. With its clear and engaging style, this new edition retains its essential simplicity. Long and detailed calculations are replaced by simple approximate ones. It includes introductions to accelerators, colliders, and detectors, and several main experimental tests of the Standard Model are explained. Descriptions of some well-motivated extensions of the Standard Model prepare the reader for new developments. It emphasizes the concepts of gauge theories and Higgs physics, electroweak unification and symmetry breaking, and how force strengths vary with energy, providing a solid foundation for those working in the field, and for those who simply want to learn about the Standard Model.
