Book The Shadow of the Evening

Download or read book The Shadow of the Evening written by Laura Brylawski-Miller and published by . This book was released on 2010-05 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Against the background of the mystery of the Etruscans and the beauty of Tuscany, The Shadow of the Evening interweaves the lives of two cousins, David and Alexander, from a summer spent at their grandmother's farm in Maryland, to a dark resolution in the Tuscan city of Volterra. Fifteen-year-old Alexander is a genius, whose brilliant, flawed mind is obsessed with the Etruscans, an obsession that will end in tragedy. Twelve-year-old David, more rooted in reality, is caught up in their summer of the Etruscans and almost comes to believe in Alexander's fantasies. The two lose track of each other, but that long ago summer remains unfinished business and will bring David, thirty years later, to Volterra to find out what happened to his cousin. There he will not only find the answers, but also reach an epiphany in his own life. The first part of the book tells David's story. The second is a narration of events in Volterra, seen through Alexander's disintegrating mind. The third part takes place in Volterra, where David investigates the mystery of Alexander. Overlaying the human mystery is the enigmatic presence of The Shadow of the Evening, an Etruscan statue that appears to create a continuum between past and present, challenging our belief that we are more evolved than past civilizations. About the Author: Laura Brylawski-Miller was born and grew up in Milan, Italy, and now resides in Arlington, Virginia. She holds a BS in allied health and an MFA in creative writing. She has publi

Book Spaces of Danger

    Book Details:
  • Author : Heather Merrill
  • Publisher : University of Georgia Press
  • Release : 2015-12-01
  • ISBN : 0820348759
  • Pages : 344 pages

Download or read book Spaces of Danger written by Heather Merrill and published by University of Georgia Press. This book was released on 2015-12-01 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These twelve original essays by geographers and anthropologists offer a deep critical understanding of Allan Pred’s pathbreaking and eclectic cultural Marxist approach, with a focus on his concept of “situated ignorance”: the production and reproduction of power and inequality by regimes of truth through strategically deployed misinformation, diversions, and silences. As the essays expose the cultural and material circumstances in which situated ignorance persists, they also add a previously underexplored spatial dimension to Walter Benjamin’s idea of “moments of danger.” The volume invokes the aftermath of the July 2011 attacks by far-right activist Anders Breivik in Norway, who ambushed a Labor Party youth gathering and bombed a government building, killing and injuring many. Breivik had publicly and forthrightly declared war against an array of liberal attitudes he saw threatening Western civilization. However, as politicians and journalists interpreted these events for mass consumption, a narrative quickly emerged that painted Breivik as a lone madman and steered the discourse away from analysis of the resurgent right-wing racisms and nationalisms in which he was immersed. The Breivik case is merely one of the most visible recent examples, say editors Heather Merrill and Lisa Hoffman, of the unchallenged production of knowledge in the public sphere. In essays that range widely in topic and setting—for example, brownfield development in China, a Holocaust memorial in Germany, an art gallery exhibit in South Africa—this volume peels back layers of “situated practices and their associated meaning and power relations.” Spaces of Danger offers analytical and conceptual tools of a Predian approach to interrogate the taken-for-granted and make visible and legible that which is silenced.

Book The Making and Unmaking of Mediterranean Landscape in Italian Literature

Download or read book The Making and Unmaking of Mediterranean Landscape in Italian Literature written by Tullio Pagano and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2015-04-29 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book focuses on literary representations of the northern Italian region of Liguria, whose landscape has been portrayed by internationally-known Italian poets and novelists, from Eugenio Montale to Italo Calvino. The author argues that the most perceptive authors situate themselves on a metaphorical ridge dividing the “dark side” of Mediterranean landscape, with its harsh and mountainous territory, from the sun-drenched Riviera, celebrated by the tourist industry and for the most part destroyed during the so-called economic boom. The complex and often antithetical concepts of landscape examined in the introduction inform the author’s readings of those modern and contemporary writers who have tried to make sense of the ambivalences present in Ligurian landscape, from the period of Italian Risorgimento to the present.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Instrumental Music in Late Eighteenth Century Naples

Download or read book Instrumental Music in Late Eighteenth Century Naples written by Anthony R. DelDonna and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2020-12-17 with total page 339 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The music of early modern Naples and its renowned artistic traditions remain a fruitful area for scholars in eighteenth-century studies. Contemporary social, political, and artistic conditions had stimulated a significant growth of music, musicians and culture in the Kingdom of Naples from the beginning of the seventeenth century. Although eighteenth-century Neapolitan opera is well documented in scholarship, historians have paid much less attention to the simultaneous cultivation of instrumental genres. Yet the culture of instrumental music grew steadily and by its end became an exclusive area of focus for the royal court, a remarkable departure from past norms of patronage. By bridging this gap, Anthony R. DelDonna brings together diverse fields, including historical musicology, music theory, Neapolitan and European history. His book investigates the wide-ranging role of instrumental genres within late eighteenth-century Neapolitan culture and introduces readers to new material, including recently discovered instrumental works of Paisiello, Cimarosa and Pleyel.
