Book The Rights of the Child in a Changing World

Download or read book The Rights of the Child in a Changing World written by Olga Cvejić Jančić and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-11-17 with total page 422 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book deals with the implementation of the rights of the child as enshrined in the Convention on the Rights of the Child in 21 countries from Europe, Asia, Australia, and the USA. It gives an overview of the legal status of children regarding their most salient rights, such as the implementation of the best interest principle, the right of the child to know about of his/her origin, the right to be heard, to give medical consent, the right of the child in the field of employment, religious education of children, prohibition of physical punishment, protection of the child through deprivation of parental rights and in the case of inter-country adoption. In the last 25 years since the Convention on the Rights of the Child was adopted, many States Parties to the Convention have made great efforts to pass legislation regulating the rights of the child, in their commitment to the improvement of the legal status of the child. However, is that enough for any child to live better, safer, and healthier? What are the practical effects of this international as well as many national instruments in the everyday life of children? Have there been any outcomes in terms of improvement of their status around the world, and improvement of the conditions under which they live, since the Convention entered into force? In tackling these questions, this work presents a comparative overview of the implementation of the Convention, and evaluates the results achieved.

Book Viruses and Reproductive Injustice

Download or read book Viruses and Reproductive Injustice written by Ilana Löwy and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2024-01-30 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Brazil's Zika outbreak revealed extreme health disparities and reproductive injustice across racial and socioeconomic lines. Brazil's 2015 Zika outbreak led to severe illnesses for many and the birth of several thousands of children with severe brain damage. Even though mosquito-borne diseases such as the Zika virus affect people across society, these children were born almost exclusively to poor, and usually non-white, women. In Viruses and Reproductive Injustice, Ilana Löwy explores the complicated health disparities and reproductive injustice that led to these cases of congenital Zika syndrome. Löwy examines the history of the outbreak in Brazil and connects it to broader questions concerning reproductive rights, the medical science behind understanding new pathogens, and the role of international health organizations in battling—or ignoring—public health crises. The explanation behind the strongly skewed distribution of cases among social classes was far from straightforward or obvious during the Zika outbreak. Löwy argues that the disproportionate effect of Zika on births among the poor is primarily a function of dramatic disparities in access to contraception and prenatal care, as well as Brazil's anti-abortion laws: only wealthier women have access to safe abortions. This is a book about the changing meaning of an infectious disease outbreak and a haunting demonstration that an epidemic is both a biological and a political event produced by the complicated entanglement of humans, viruses, and mosquitoes.

Download or read book Questions thiques en m decine pr dictive written by Armelle de Bouvet and published by John Libbey Eurotext. This book was released on 2006 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Biomedicine the Family and Human Rights

Download or read book Biomedicine the Family and Human Rights written by Marie-Thérèse Meulders-Klein and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2002-04-01 with total page 650 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume examines the impact of advances in genetics and assisted reproduction technologies on family law, human rights and the rights of the child, including the effects of international treaties on national legislation. It surveys the theoretical, ethical and legal discussions with regard to biotechnology and family law issues and the search for a balance between safeguarding respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms and the need to ensure freedom of research. However, biotechnology impinges not only on isolated individuals and their rights, but also on unborn children, the family as a network of living relationships and the basic structure of any society, as well as the foundation of parentage and kinship, social organization as a whole and, finally, mankind itself. As the attention of the World turns to cloning, this book will contribute to the search for a balance between the rights and freedoms of born and yet to be born human beings and the quest for new technologies.

Download or read book Daughters of 1968 written by Lisa Greenwald and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2019 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Daughters of 1968 is the story of French feminism between 1944 and 1981, when feminism played a central political role in the history of France. The key women during this epoch were often leftists committed to a materialist critique of society and were part of a postwar tradition that produced widespread social change, revamping the workplace and laws governing everything from abortion to marriage. The May 1968 events—with their embrace of radical individualism and antiauthoritarianism—triggered a break from the past, and the women’s movement split into two strands. One became universalist and intensely activist, the other particularist and less activist, distancing itself from contemporary feminism. This theoretical debate manifested itself in battles between women and organizations on the streets and in the courts. The history of French feminism is the history of women’s claims to individualism and citizenship that had been granted their male counterparts, at least in principle, in 1789. Yet French women have more often donned the mantle of particularism, advancing their contributions as mothers to prove their worth as citizens, than they have thrown it off, claiming absolute equality. The few exceptions, such as Simone de Beauvoir or the 1970s activists, illustrate the diversity and tensions within French feminism, as France moved from a corporatist and tradition-minded country to one marked by individualism and modernity.

This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The conference of the European Institute for social security, on the social security and the economic crisis, prepared by its Colloque, held in Tole do in 1981, was held from the 30th of September untill the 2nd of October in Zoetermeer, the Netherlands. The Yearbook 1982 contains the reports presented at the Conference in Zoetermeer, which was opened by the Dutch Minister of Social Affairs and Employment, L. de Graaf. The Conference had before it ten national reports and seven synthesis reports (Paul 0 'Higgins, Benefits in general; Jan Pierik, Financing; Winfried Schmahl, Pensions; Yves Saint Jours, Health; Pasquale Sandulli, Unemployment; Martin Partington, Minimum income and family allowances; Jef van Langendonck, Social Security and Economic Insecurity). Most unfortunately Paul O'Higgins did not deliver the written text of his report and we regret that for that reason, we cannot include his report in this yearbook. The Conference, which got the hospitality of the Dutch Social Security Council in Zoetermeer, was very well organised and financed by the Dutch social security institutions and the Ministry of Social Affairs and Employment. The Institute wants to express its sincere gratitude to Mr. J. Oosterhuis and his collegues and to the ladies of the secretariat Annemie Dancot, Jose Goes, Joke Torenburg and Lisette Veldkamp.
