L’uso efficiente delle tecnologie, la pratica della qualità totale, la compatibilità ambientale e la gestione dell’internazionalizzazione sono i pilastri su cui si fonda il paradigma di una “innovazione a 360°”. D’altra parte, come viene spesso sottolineato in ambiti istituzionali e imprenditoriali, innovare è indispensabile per sostenere la crescita delle aziende e del sistema paese. Occorre perciò attrezzarsi adeguatamente per affrontare i rischi e i pericoli dell’innovazione. Parte di questa “attrezzatura” è sicuramente costituita dalle tecniche organizzative e gestionali con le quali si supporta il processo di innovazione. Questo volume si concentra proprio su uno di questi strumenti, finalizzato a monitorare le attività di innovazione ed a valutarne le performance. Il ruolo che i sistemi di misura della performance rivestono nel supportare le imprese a raggiungere e mantenere i vantaggi competitivi è stato largamente riconosciuto dalla letteratura manageriale, che ha visto impegnati innumerevoli studiosi ed operatori nell’analisi relativa alle modalità con cui progettare, implementare ed usare sistemi di performance all’interno delle organizzazioni.

The main conclusion of the analysis in these chapters is that there is a strong relationship between innovation and entrepreneurship. Moreover, this book articulates two contradictory schools of thought; first that firms with a higher entrepreneurial orientation have higher relative international sales and operate in a greater number of foreign countries; and secondly that entrepreneurial orientation is not associated with subsidiary financial or market performance, but is positively and significantly associated with subsidiary idea generation which are subsequently converted into marketable products and services through the innovation process. This book acts as a negotiation between these two perspectives.

But some changes provoke more attention than others, in part due to the vast uncertainty involved in making predictions about the future. The 2019 World Development Report will study how the nature of work is changing as a result of advances in technology today. Technological progress disrupts existing systems. A new social contract is needed to smooth the transition and guard against rising inequality. Significant investments in human capital throughout a person’s lifecycle are vital to this effort. If workers are to stay competitive against machines they need to train or retool existing skills. A social protection system that includes a minimum basic level of protection for workers and citizens can complement new forms of employment. Improved private sector policies to encourage startup activity and competition can help countries compete in the digital age. Governments also need to ensure that firms pay their fair share of taxes, in part to fund this new social contract. The 2019 World Development Report presents an analysis of these issues based upon the available evidence.
