Combining a wide range of research traditions from all over Europe and utilizing evidence from Italy, the western provinces, and the Greek-speaking east, this edited collection is divided into four sections. It first considers the scholarly history of Roman crafts and trade in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, focusing on Germany and the Anglo-Saxon world, and on Italy and France. Chapters discuss how scholarly thinking about Roman craftsmen and traders was influenced by historical and intellectual developments in the modern world, and how different (national) research traditions followed different trajectories throughout the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The second section highlights the economic strategies of craftsmen and traders, examining strategies of long-distance traders and the phenomenon of specialization, and presenting case studies of leather-working and bread-baking. In the third section, the human factor in urban crafts and trade-including the role of apprenticeship, gender, freedmen, and professional associations-is analysed, and the volume ends by exploring the position of crafts in urban space, considering the evidence for artisanal clustering in the archaeological and papyrological record, and providing case studies of the development of commercial landscapes at Aquincum on the Danube and at Sagalassos in Pisidia.

Il titolo, e la poesia stessa, sono sembrati pertinenti a sintetizzare il senso del progetto archeologico sull’antica Equilo, di cui si pubblicano in questo volume i primi risultati. ‘In limine’ significa ‘sulla soglia’: indica cioè un punto di passaggio, un confine; e, nel nostro caso, metaforicamente rimarca il discrimine tra passato e presente, il luogo archeologico dove la materia inerte diviene narrazione. Qui, in limine, è anche uno spazio fisico preciso, quello dell’area delle ‘Antiche Mura’, luogo anche tangibile della memoria collettiva. Un luogo, ieri come oggi, ai margini. Se l’antica Equilo era stato un insediamento sul confine instabile tra mare e laguna, la moderna Jesolo, che ne ha ereditato il nome, ha lasciato che i ruderi della sua memoria restassero al di fuori del centro abitato: nel punto dove la città diventa campagna, lì sorgono le rovine dell’antica cattedrale, lì rimane il reliquiario della comunità, come una sorta di giardino ‘dove affonda un morto viluppo di memorie’ (di nuovo Montale). Gli archeologi hanno cercato nel tempo di recuperare quelle memorie e quel passato, con pazienza e fatica. Così, il progetto nato qualche anno fa per iniziativa del Dipartimento di Studi Umanistici dell’Università Ca’ Foscari di Venezia, non costituisce che l’ultimo atto di un percorso che ha inizio dalla metà del secolo scorso, con gli scavi nell’area della cattedrale e nel vicino sito della chiesa di San Mauro. I contributi che si pubblicano in questa circostanza raccontano e sintetizzano i risultati degli ultimi anni di scavi. L’interconnessione tra le varie strategie di indagine ci ha consentito di proporre una ricostruzione storico-insediativa del sito del tutto inedita e sorprendente.

Book excerpt: The debasement of coinage, particularly of silver, was a common feature of pre-modern monetary systems. Most coinages were issued by state authorities and the condition of a coinage is often seen (rightly or wrongly) as an indicator of the broader fiscal health of the state that produced it. While in some cases the motives behind the debasements or reductions in standards are clear, in many cases the intentions of the issuing authorities are uncertain. Various explanations have been advanced: fiscal motives (such as a desire to profit or a to cover a deficit caused by the failure to balance expenditure and revenues); monetary motives (such as changing demand for coined money or a desire to maintain monetary stability in the face of changing values of raw materials or labour costs); pressure from groups within society that would profit from debasement; misconduct at the mint; or the decline of existing monetary standards due to circulation and wear of the coinage in circulation. Certain explanations have tended to gain favour with monetary historians of specific periods, partly reflecting the compartmentalization of scholarship. Thus the study of Roman debasements emphasizes fiscal deficits, whereas medievalists are often more prepared to consider monetary factors as contributing to debasements. To some extent these different approaches are a reflection of discrepancies in the amount of documentary evidence available for the respective periods, but the divide also underlines fundamentally different approaches to the function of coinage: Romanists have preferred to see coins as a medium for state payments; whereas medievalists have often emphasized exchange as an important function of currency. The volume is inter-disciplinary in scope. Apart from bringing together monetary historians of different periods, it also contains contributions from archaeometallurgists who have experience with the chemical and physical composition of coins and technical aspects of production of base alloys
