Book The Origin of Races and Color

Download or read book The Origin of Races and Color written by Martin Robison Delany and published by Black Classic Press. This book was released on 1991 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Of the books authored by Martin R. Delany (1812-1885), The Origin of Races and Color is perhaps the most obscure. Out-of-print until now, it has been available to the public only through select libraries. At the time of its publication in 1879, this valuable resource presented a bold challenge to racist views of African inferiority. Delany wrote in opposition to a developing oppressive intellectualism that used Darwin's thesis, "the survival of the fittest," to support its demented theories of Black inferiority. Skillfully blending biblical history, archaeology and anthropology, Delany offered evidence to the "serious inquirer" suggesting the first humans were African, and that these Africans were ". . . builders of the pyramids, sculptors of the sphinxes, and original god-kings. . . ." With such radical assertions, Delany advanced a model of ancient history that contradicted the very foundation of intellectual racism. He believed knowledge of one's past was essential, and that it could provide Black people with the regenerative force necessary to inspire their self-improvement. Were he alive today, Delany would certainly feel at home with the present generation of Africancentrists, especially since he developed and articulated so many of their arguments more than a century ago.

Book Origin and Antiquity of Man Classic Reprint

Download or read book Origin and Antiquity of Man Classic Reprint written by Hudson Tuttle and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-24 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Origin and Antiquity of Man There are two classes of writers who produce two very distinct classes of books. The first are trained to write, as the gladiators were trained to fight, and are the present champions of the prize-ring. Libraries and encyclopaedias are their weapons. The skilful use of these is their strength. They learn to polish periods, and write over other men's ideas, and by burnishing and varnishing, and a slight veneer of wording, present them so different that their authors do not recognize their own children. They do not write because they have any thing to say, but because there is honor and profit in the pen. The second class write because they have something to say. Libraries are of little benefit to them, and because of their originality, they are not encouraged by profit. I claim no skill in modelling sentences, or in the desirable art of presenting my subjects in their most pleasing forms; nor can I claim to belong to that class who have something worthy of record to say when they write. Book Pr cis of the Lectures on Architecture

Download or read book Pr cis of the Lectures on Architecture written by Jean-Nicolas-Louis Durand and published by Getty Publications. This book was released on 2000-01-01 with total page 363 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jean-Nicolas-Louis Durand (1760–1834) regarded the Précis of the Lectures on Architecture (1802–5) and its companion volume, the Graphic Portion (1821), as both a basic course for future civil engineers and a treatise. Focusing the practice of architecture on utilitarian and economic values, he assailed the rationale behind classical architectural training: beauty, proportionality, and symbolism. His formal systematization of plans, elevations, and sections transformed architectural design into a selective modular typology in which symmetry and simple geometrical forms prevailed. His emphasis on pragmatic values, to the exclusion of metaphysical concerns, represented architecture as a closed system that subjected its own formal language to logical processes. Now published in English for the first time, the Précis and the Graphic Portion are classics of architectural education.

Download or read book Painted Love written by Hollis Clayson and published by Getty Publications. This book was released on 2003-10-30 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this engrossing book, Hollis Clayson provides the first description and analysis of French artistic interest in women prostitutes, examining how the subject was treated in the art of the 1870s and 1880s by such avant-garde painters as Cézanne, Degas, Manet, and Renoir, as well as by the academic and low-brow painters who were their contemporaries. Clayson not only illuminates the imagery of prostitution-with its contradictory connotations of disgust and fascination-but also tackles the issues and problems relevant to women and men in a patriarchal society. She discusses the conspicuous sexual commerce during this era and the resulting public panic about the deterioration of social life and civilized mores. She describes the system that evolved out of regulating prostitutes and the subsequent rise of clandestine prostitutes who escaped police regulation and who were condemned both for blurring social boundaries and for spreading sexual licentiousness among their moral and social superiors. Clayson argues that the subject of covert prostitution was especially attractive to vanguard painters because it exemplified the commercialization and the ambiguity of modern life.
