À cette double question, les réponses sont multiples et le christianisme apporte aussi la sienne car, sur ce point, il diffère totalement des autres religions qui ne font pas de place au temps. La pensée chrétienne est en effet une histoire avant d'être une doctrine : elle a donné à la temporalité et à la perspective historique une dignité extraordinaire, en y faisant vivre le propre fils de Dieu. Dans un contexte où de nombreux problèmes pastoraux et doctrinaux se posent à la société chrétienne, celle-ci doit s'adapter et ne semble pouvoir le faire qu'en ayant les yeux fixés sur la vraie destinée de l'humanité. Cet ouvrage se propose ainsi de revenir sur la conception biblique de l'histoire du salut, à travers l'étude de la pensée des Pères de l'Église, qui nous ramène à la Tradition des premiers siècles de notre ère. Une tradition qui, dans l'ensemble de la littérature patristique, expose l'histoire du salut dans le cadre des âges du monde. Ainsi, pour connaître la pensée des Pères de l'Église sur l'histoire religieuse de l'humanité, sur ses étapes comme sur son sens, cette étude offre une analyse de leur théorie sur chaque âge comme sur le mouvement d'ensemble. Du thème des millénaires conçu par Irénée à la Cité de Dieu de saint Augustin, elle nous permet de comprendre la formation d'une perspective historique au sein du christianisme, associée, dès ses débuts, au dessein salvifique de Dieu pour l'humanité.

Book excerpt: This is the first large scale study on the link between the concepts of intellect and grace in the writings of St. Augustine of Hippo. Its five chapters deal with Augustine's writings on grace as they focus on questions concerning epistemology and hermeneutics. Already non-Christian ancient philosophers identified intellectual perfection with salvation as caused by divine grace. Under their influence (I) Augustine developed also his biblical thought (II). The culmination of his concept of intellectus gratiae, however, came in the later works on sacraments (III), hermeneutics (IV) and against Pelagius and Julian of Eclanum (V). This study highlights that development and recommends the concept of intellectus gratiae as a possible key to Augustine's theological thought as a whole.
