Book excerpt: For 4 million slaves, emancipation was a liberation and resurrection story of biblical proportion, both the clearest example of God's intervention in human history and a sign of the end of days. In this book, Matthew Harper demonstrates how black southerners' theology, in particular their understanding of the end times, influenced nearly every major economic and political decision they made in the aftermath of emancipation. From considering what demands to make in early Reconstruction to deciding whether or not to migrate west, African American Protestants consistently inserted themselves into biblical narratives as a way of seeing the importance of their own struggle in God's greater plan for humanity. Phrases like "jubilee," "Zion," "valley of dry bones," and the "New Jerusalem" in black-authored political documents invoked different stories from the Bible to argue for different political strategies. This study offers new ways of understanding the intersections between black political and religious thought of this era. Until now, scholarship on black religion has not highlighted how pervasive or contested these beliefs were. This narrative, however, tracks how these ideas governed particular political moments as African Americans sought to define and defend their freedom in the forty years following emancipation.

Book excerpt: Author of Circuit of Heaven “Danvers’s move to SF is a welcome one.” Washington Post THE PATH TO ETERNAL LIFE TRAVELS THROUGH CIRCUITRY In his prophetic masterwork Circuit of Heaven, author Dennis Danvers created the "Bin," a computer-generated paradise into which the vast majority of the world's inhabitants escaped to live forever in virtual bliss. In END OF DAYS, Danvers returns us to this technological Eden—and to the ghost planet, Earth, which humanity abandoned. Seventy years have passed since an army of religious zealots "destroyed" the Bin. Now, in the rubble of New Jerusalem—the ruined city once called Washington—a young Christian Soldier named Sam has uncovered a prototype housing a single uploaded personality. The release of renegade geneticist Walter Tillman from his hundred-year prison leads Sam to an even more astonishing discovery: the Bin, with its billions of inhabitants—including Tillman's lost lover, Stephanie, who desires the freedom of death—still exists, unbeknownst to the mad messianic leader Gabriel and his Army of the Lord. But soon Gabriel, too, will learn of the Bin's survival. And as doubts erode Sam's religious fervor, as Tillman strives to reunite with his love, and events on Earth and in virtual Heaven move rapidly toward a violent, inescapable conclusion, the destinies of disembodied and planet-bound souls alike will converge. And the consequences will be worlds-shattering. "A worthy sequel to Circuit of Heaven... a thoughtful and consistently entertaining book." The New York Times Book Review

While Pike Logan and Jennifer Cahill prepare to join their team on a counter-terrorist mission in the triple frontier—the lawless tri-border region where Argentina, Brazil, and Paraguay meet—they are targeted in Charleston, South Carolina. A vicious explosion kills a friend, and the perpetrators have set it up to look like an accident. While the authorities believe this was not foul play, Pike knows the attack was meant for him. His men are the closest thing to family that Pike has, which means he will do anything, even ignore direct orders to stand down, to find them. Pike and Jennifer head to Brazil to investigate their disappearance and run headlong into a crew of Russian assassins. Within days they are entangled in a byzantine scheme involving Brazilian politics and a cut-throat battle for control of offshore oil fields. Book The End of Days Fundamentalism and the Struggle for the Temple Mount

Download or read book The End of Days Fundamentalism and the Struggle for the Temple Mount written by Gershom Gorenberg and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2002-03-15 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this provocative work, seasoned journalist Gershom Gorenberg portrays a deadly mix of religious extremism, violence, and Mideast politics, as expressed in the struggle for the sacred center of Jerusalem. Known to Jews and Christians as the Temple Mount and to Muslims as the Noble Sanctuary, this thirty-five-acre enclosure at the southeast corner of Jerusalem's Old City is the most contested piece of real estate on earth. Here nationalism combines with fundamentalist faith in a volatile brew. Members of the world's three major monotheistic faiths--Judaism, Christianity, and Islam--hold this spot to be the key to salvation as they await the end of the world, and struggle to fulfill conflicting religious prophecies with dangerous political consequences. Adroitly portraying American radio evangelists of the End, radical Palestinian sheikhs, and Israeli ex-terrorists, Gorenberg explains why believers hope for the End, and why prominent American fundamentalists provide hard-line support for Israel while looking forward to the apocalypse. He makes sense of the messianic fervor that has driven some Israeli settlers to oppose peace. And he describes the Islamic apocalyptic visions that cast Israel's actions in Jerusalem as diabolic plots. The End of Days shows how conflict over Jerusalem and the fiery belief in apocalypse continue to have a potent impact on world politics and why a lasting peace in the Middle East continues to prove elusive.

All mainstream religions traditionally share similar perspectives regarding the Antichrist and his developing systems, which have been foretold by all prophets or messengers dutifully sent to every nation over time. This book carefully explores the much-debated topic of the Antichrist, regarding his future emergence. Will he lead humanity to eternal darkness, or enlightenment? Although modern science and human history popularly refer to the last 5,000–15,000 years of development, in reality, there are signs and evidence that human development is considerably older, with possibilities of supernatural or otherworldly intervention. This book explores stories such as the Nimrod who meticulously researched into longevity and occult magic, with a possibility of alien or supernatural influence which was captured on stone glyphs. Throughout history, there have been developed, mighty empires whose chosen kings proclaimed to be Gods... But were they actually inter-dimensional beings?
