Hailed by his contemporaries as one of the foremost German-language novelists of the inter-war period, and celebrated for his Expressionist poetry and his controversial First World War drama Hans im Schnakenloch, Schickele also produced socio-critical essays and pioneering editorial work for the pacifist journal Die Weißen Blätter. From his literary débuts in fin-de-siècle Strasbourg to the French and German prose fiction of his anti-Nazi exile, Schickele's work reflects his bilingual, bicultural upbringing: his vision of Alsace as a symbolic broker of Franco-German peace finds its clearest expression in the trilogy of novels Das Erbe am Rhein. Schickele remains a paradoxical figure, in his own words, a 'citoyen français und deutscher Dichter' (French citizen and German poet). Through readings of all the major texts, Eric Robertson's study situates Schickele's work within its socio-political and historical context. Particular attention is paid to the personal and political implications of his adoption of German as literary idiom and his reversion to the French mother tongue during the 1930s; Schickele's copious diaries and his correspondence with fellow writers including Thomas Mann, Heinrich Mann and Stefan Zweig are shown to be especially revealing. Schickele's œuvre holds a unique and hitherto underrated place in the European writing of his era.

Book excerpt: This book recounts France’s responses to refugees from the liberation of Paris in 1944 to the end of the civil wars in the former Yugoslavia in 1995. It questions whether France fulfilled the promise of asylum for those persecuted for the ‘cause of liberty’ made in its Constitution of 1946. Post-war development and the demand for immigrant workers were favourable to refugees from the Communist east, from Franco’s Spain, from Hungary after insurrection of 1956, and later from Latin America and Indochina. Asylum developed nationally in conjunction with international developments, the interventions of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, and the adoption of the 1951 Refugee Convention. Economic ruptures in the 1970s, however, and the appearance of refugees from Asia and Africa, led to the assertion of national priorities and brought about a sense of crisis, and questions about whether France could continue to fulfil its promise.

This book explores the array of opportunities, constraints, choices and motivations that characterised their lives. Using a wide range of empirical material, it presents a compelling case for rethinking exile in relation to refugees’ lived experiences and memory activities. The major historical events of the period are covered: the development of refugees’ rights and the ‘concentration’ camps of the Third Republic, the para-military labour formations of the Second World War, the dynamics shaping resistance activities, and the role of memory in the campaign to return to Spain. Partant du choc culturel qu'a represente l'ambassade de Carneade en 155 et se poursuivant jusqu'a la fin de l'epoque ciceronienne, cet ouvrage brosse le tableau des evolutions qu'ont connues durant cette periode les statuts successifs ou concomitants de l'ecrivain et de l'ecrit, la hierarchisation des oeuvres et des genres, la nature du lectorat qu'il faut voir comme un co-auteur ou co-acteur de l'oeuvre. L'etude proposee montre en particulier combien les evenements historiques, les mutations societales, l'evolution des mentalites ont modifie le rapport a l'ecriture et a l'ecrit des auteurs et des lecteurs, la maniere de concevoir des discours, des ouvrages historiques, des traites, des poemes et des pieces de theatre. Pour cette enquete, les oeuvres perdues et les oeuvres conservees ont ete traitees, autant que faire se peut, a egalite, les analyses litteraires ont ete conjuguees a des analyses sociologiques et historico-politiques qui interesseront, au-dela des specialistes de litterature antique, de philologie, d'histoire romaine, un public large d'etudiants de Lettres et d'Histoire ancienne. Il convient de lire cet ouvrage non comme une histoire de la litterature latine qui viendrait s'ajouter a tant d'autres, mais comme une histoire des ecrivains qui ont fait, dans les deux derniers siecles de la Republique, la litterature ecrite et ont ete les acteurs d'une veritable revolution culturelle.
