Book Language Ethnic Identity and the State

Download or read book Language Ethnic Identity and the State written by William Safran and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-02-04 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new study powerfully asserts the pivotal importance of the interplay between language and ethnicity, which is often underestimated as a component for political stability. These leading scholars present five key case studies of South Africa, Algeria, Canada, Latvia and Senegal. All five countries are multilingual nations where language has been a central political issue that has challenged their unity and stability. These studies are underpinned by two general, comparative and theoretical discussions, which analyse how scholars consider social class and economic factors to be the primary sources for political cohesion or of malcontent with the system and the new avenues opened by a focus on issues of langauge. This book will be of great interest to all students and scholars of linguistics, language, politics and sociology. This is a special issue of the leading journal Nationalism and Ethnic Politics.

Book An Essay on the Modern State

Download or read book An Essay on the Modern State written by Christopher W. Morris and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2002-07-29 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This important book is the first serious philosophical examination of the modern state. It inquires into the justification of this particular form of political society. It asks whether all states are "nation-states," what are the alternative ways of organizing society, and which conditions make a state legitimate. The author concludes that, while states can be legitimate, they typically fail to have the powers (e.g. sovereignity) that they claim. Christopher Morris has written a book that will command the attention of political philosophers, political scientists, legal theorists, and specialists in international relations.

Book The Beginning Translator s Workbook

Download or read book The Beginning Translator s Workbook written by Michele H. Jones and published by University Press of America. This book was released on 2014-03-18 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This workbook combines methodology and practice for beginning translators with a solid proficiency in French. It assumes a linguistic approach to the problems of translation and addresses common pitfalls, including the delineation of “translation units”, word polysemy, false cognates, and structural and cultural obstacles to literal translation. The first part of the book focuses on specific strategies used by professionals to counter these problems, including transposition, modulation, equivalence, and adaptation. The second part of the book provides a global application of the techniques taught in the opening sections, guiding the student through step-by-step translations of literary and non-literary excerpts. The revised edition clarifies some of the finer points of the translation techniques introduced in the first edition, provides extra practice exercises, and offers information on a website that can be used in class.

Book Le Claperman L ne d or By Alexis Piron

Download or read book Le Claperman L ne d or By Alexis Piron written by Derek Connon and published by MHRA. This book was released on 2022-12-01 with total page 159 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alexis Piron was a significant figure in France in the first part of the eighteenth century and his twenty or so opéras-comiques include some of the finest works in the genre. The two plays included in this edition are among Piron’s best, and have in common the fact that they make use of pre-existing sources, although these are very different in kind, being, on the one hand, a short and obscure text made available by a group of writers working in the Netherlands but writing in French, and, on the other, one of the best known works of classical literature, the only novel in Latin to survive complete, The Golden Ass of Apuleius. The introduction studies how these disparate texts have been adapted, and notes draw attention to points of detail, comparing and contrasting the two plays. The background to the development of the genre of opéra-comique is also discussed, as is Piron’s use of the musical material associated with the genre in the first decades of its existence.
