Book Between Regulation and Freedom

Download or read book Between Regulation and Freedom written by Andrea Caracausi and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2018-11-12 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains selected essays which together re-frame the roles of guilds in medieval and early modern European cities. They focus on the different ways in which we can understand the interfaces between regulatory frameworks, represented by guild and civic regulations, and the wider world of labour and production. Through case studies of single cities, economic sectors, and of territories, they address a range of questions about the operation of labour markets, the nature of guild regulation within and outside guild jurisdictions, and the interaction between ‘regulation’ and ‘freedom’ as expressed in legislation and in the organization of production and distribution. In doing so, they offer a means to compare and contrast experiences across Europe and the circumstances which determined and altered economic structures and, in turn, political and social structures in cities.

Book Italian Humanist Photography from Fascism to the Cold War

Download or read book Italian Humanist Photography from Fascism to the Cold War written by Martina Caruso and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-08-19 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spanning four decades of radical political and social change in Italy, this interdisciplinary study explores photography’s relationship with Italian painting, film, literature, anthropological research and international photography. Evocative and powerful, Italian social documentary photography from the 1930s to the 1960s is a rich source of cultural history, reflecting a time of dramatic change. This book shows, through a wide range of images (some published for the first time) that to fully understand the photography of this period we must take a more expansive view than scholars have applied to date, considering issues of propaganda, aesthetics, religion, national identity and international influences. By setting Italian photography against a backdrop of social documentary and giving it a distinctive place in the global history of photography, this exciting volume of original research is of interest to art historians and scholars of Italian and visual culture studies.

Book Revolution and the Meanings of Freedom in the Nineteenth Century

Download or read book Revolution and the Meanings of Freedom in the Nineteenth Century written by Isser Woloch and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 1996 with total page 470 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the aftermath of the French Revolution, "freedom” came to have a host of meanings. This volume examines these contested visions of freedom both inside and outside of revolutionary situations in the nineteenth century, as each author explores and interprets the development of nineteenth-century political culture in a particular national context. The common focus is the struggle in various countries to define, advance, or delimit freedom after the French Revolution. The introductory chapter evokes the problematic relationships between reform and revolution and introduces themes that appear in subsequent chapters, though each chapter is a free-standing interpretive essay. Among the issues addressed are the growth of the public sphere and associational movements; battles over constitutionalism, parliamentary institutions, and the franchise; the role of the state in inhibiting or expanding citizenship and the rule of law; the resort to violence by parties of order or parties of change; and the intrusion of new social questions or ethnic conflicts into the political arena.

Download or read book Risorgimento in Exile written by Maurizio Isabella and published by Oxford University Press on Demand. This book was released on 2009-08-27 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Exile represented a fundamental experience in shaping Italian national identity. This book investigates the contribution of the Italian exile community in Europe and Latin America in the post Napoleonic era to imagining a new Italian political and economic community. By looking at the writings of such exiles, the book challenges recent historiography regarding the lack of genuine liberal culture in the Risorgimento. It argues that these émigrés' involvement in debates with British, continental, and American intellectuals, points to the emergence of liberalism and Romanticism as international ideologies shared by a community of patriots from Southern Europe as well as Latin America, and demonstrates that the Risorgimento first developed as a variation upon such global trends.

Book Architecture and Violence

Download or read book Architecture and Violence written by Bechir Kenzari and published by ACTAR Publishers. This book was released on 2011 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In today's turbulent times few subjects deserve a closer scrutiny than the interactions between violence and constructed environment. Modernity's contradictory histories laid bare the fact that it is impossible to consider architecture simply a benign, passive victim of humanity's violent vices. Built space is as capable of incarnating violent acts as enacting them, disciplining and silencing the subject in the process. In this compelling volume, some of the most incisive thinkers of contemporary architectural theory make manifest the intricacies of interrelations between architecture and violent events. Employing a wide variety of perspectives and methodical approaches, the authors examine some of the most dramatic and unexpected instances of these vexing relations"--Back cover.
