Book excerpt: The Abbaye du Saint Esprit was a successful work of vernacular spiritual advice for women, surviving in sixteen manuscripts and a widely copied Middle English translation. Unlike many other didactic religious texts, it offers few prescriptions for behaviour; rather, it instructs the reader to build a convent of virtues in her conscience and uses the allegorical structure of the building and its inhabitants to arrange brief teachings on prayer and virtuous practice. Between its genesis in the last quarter of the thirteenth century to its final development towards the end of the fifteenth, it was reworked several times for new audiences of women both lay and cloistered, bourgeois and aristocratic. The examination of these successive adaptations offers insights into the growth of lay religious culture, the participation of women in new religious movements, and the use and transformation of twelfth and early thirteenth-century monastic formation literature for new audiences. This book also offers, for the first time, editions of all the French versions of the Abbaye and a modern English translation of the earliest version.

The majority are short papers dealing with some small and manageable point; they raise and sometimes resolve questions about the authenticity of documents, dates of events, and such like, and some unveil new texts. The smaller number of longer papers put such matters into context and indicate wider trends. The whole reflects the state of Patristic scholarship and demonstrates the vigour and popularity of the subject.

It was in February 1966 that Etienne Fouilloux met the Dominican theologian Yves Congar for the first time. He then began a thesis on the origins of ecumenism. Congar liberally opened his personal archives to him. For fifteen years, Congar did not leave the horizon of Fouilloux. Congar attended the defense of his thesis in 1980. Then, according to the work of the historian, the theologian was never far away, voluntary or involuntary protagonist of many of his studies on the theological crises of the 1930s and 1950s, the Second World War or the Second Vatican Council. In scattered but recurring touches, Fouilloux had already shed light on many aspects of Congar's work, including by publishing Journal d'un theologien. 1946-1956 (Editions du Cerf, 2000). Today, an overall plan and the cement necessary for writing a life story conceal the many stones previously brought to the building and finally constitute a biography of Father Congar. Legge highlights that, for Aquinas, Christology is intrinsically Trinitarian, in its origin and its principles, its structure, and its role in the dispensation of salvation. He investigates the Trinitarian shape of the incarnation itself: the visible mission of the Son, sent by the Father, implicating the invisible mission of the Holy Spirit to his assumed human nature. For Aquinas, Christ's humanity, at its deepest foundations, incarnates the very personal being of the divine Son and Word of the Father, and hence every action of Christ reveals the Father, is from the Father, and leads back to the Father. This study also uncovers a remarkable Spirit Christology in Aquinas: Christ as man stands in need of the Spirit's anointing to carry out his saving work; his supernatural human knowledge is dependent on the Spirit's gift; and it is the Spirit who moves and guides him in every action, from Nazareth to Golgotha.
