L'étude de ce parler affectif s'est fait à partir de l'évolution des appellations affectueuses données aux enfants, de l'évolution des pronoms personnels, du prélangage, du parler-bébé, du métalangage, de la prosodie et du jeu. Plus qu'une pédagogie implicite dans les répétitions et les structures syntaxiques simplifiées, ce langage témoigne d'une régression de la mère pour se mettre à la hauteur de son enfant. Le langage mère-enfant serait alors autant pour aller à la rencontre de l’enfant que pour se retrouver soi-même enfant, revivant la relation duelle avec sa propre mère. Les intonations et la hauteur de la voix de la mère sont très différentes selon l'âge des enfants mais surtout selon l'image qu'elle a d'eux. Le langage mère-enfant est un langage de l'entre-deux où la mère retrouve les mots de son enfance. Il n'est pas seulement parlé par les mères ; il suffit d'avoir été enfant pour le parler.
