Book Encyclical on the Christian Constitution of States Immortale Dei by Pope Leo XIII

Download or read book Encyclical on the Christian Constitution of States Immortale Dei by Pope Leo XIII written by The Staff of Christ the King Books and published by . This book was released on 2020-09 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work by the Catholic Church's greatest theologian and philosopher is not only very useful and instructive in itself, but it also serves as a friendly and easy introduction for the student to become familiar with the writings of Saint Thomas Aquinas. Carefully annotated by the Christ the King Staff, it is easily understandable to the average high school student.Written in a very easy style for the King of Cyprus, who was not a theologian or philosopher, this political work is one of the easiest works of St. Thomas. In it, St. Thomas, following the brilliant teachings of the philosopher Aristotle, teaches many beautiful things by means of clear arguments. First, he shows how very natural, and necessary government is in itself because, since man is meant to live together, a leader is needed. In doing so, the saint refutes multiple serious errors that even Catholics sometimes even fall into, as for example, "government is a necessary evil." He then lays out the various kinds of good and bad governments, showing that monarchy as the best, and tyranny being the worst. The saint then goes on to show the prime duties of a good king (and any ruler for that matter), what his reward should be, and how he should model his kingdom after God's governance of the universe. Recommended for grades 11-12. 55 pages. This beautiful little treatise is a perfect match with the biographies of the great leaders Queen Isabella of Spain and Garcia Moreno of Ecuador (both of which Christ the King Books also publishes), as well as the annotated papal encyclicals - especially Quas Primas ("On Christ the King") by Pope Pius XI, and Immortale Dei ("On the Christian Constitution of the State") by Pope Leo XIII.

Book Blessed Are the Organized

Download or read book Blessed Are the Organized written by Jeffrey Stout and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2012-12-09 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How ordinary citizens band together to bring about real change In an America where the rich and fortunate have free rein to do as they please, can the ideal of liberty and justice for all be anything but an empty slogan? Many Americans are doubtful, and have withdrawn into apathy and cynicism. But thousands of others are not ready to give up on democracy just yet. Working outside the notice of the national media, ordinary citizens across the nation are meeting in living rooms, church basements, synagogues, and schools to identify shared concerns, select and cultivate leaders, and take action. Their goal is to hold big government and big business accountable. In this important new book, Jeffrey Stout bears witness to the successes and failures of progressive grassroots organizing, and the daunting forces now arrayed against it. Stout tells vivid stories of people fighting entrenched economic and political interests around the country. From parents and teachers striving to overcome gang violence in South Central Los Angeles, to a Latino priest north of the Rio Grande who brings his parish into a citizens' organization, to the New Orleans residents who get out the vote by taking a jazz band through streets devastated by Hurricane Katrina, Stout describes how these ordinary people conceive of citizenship, how they acquire and exercise power, and how religious ideas and institutions contribute to their successes. The most important book on organizing and grassroots democracy in a generation, Blessed Are the Organized is a passionate and hopeful account of how our endangered democratic principles can be put into action.

Book The Peasant of the Garonne

Download or read book The Peasant of the Garonne written by Jacques Maritain and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2013-01-25 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At eighty-five, Jacques Maritain, the most distinguished Catholic philosopher of the twentieth century, has written what he offers as his last book, and it turns out to be a shocker. The peasant, as Maritain calls himself in the title, is a man who calls a spade a spade; and a storm of controversy descended immediately on the book's publication in France, as both Right and Left reeled from the force of Maritain's criticism. The Peasant of the Garonne is a sharp attack on the new philosophy, hoping to cool off the fever for change that Maritain believes is imperiling the church's traditional spirituality and even the substance of doctrine. There is sardonic humor in his treatment of Teilhardians, phenomenologists, existentialists, new-style biblical critics, and clerical Freudians, but Maritain is deeply serious in warning that their capitulation to fashioniable trends represents a kind of kneeling before the world.

Book Handbook of Moral Theology

Download or read book Handbook of Moral Theology written by Dominic M. Prummer and published by Benedictus. This book was released on 2022-07-25 with total page 510 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1921, Fr. Prümmer's Handbook of Moral Theology was immediately regarded as an international classic. The author's clarity of vision, precision of expression, and humble fidelity to the traditional Catholic moral framework during a period of social upheaval and increasing doctrinal deviation made his manual the standard reference text for generations of clergy, seminarians, and laity. For those seeking answers to moral questions, the Catholic advice was often "Look it up in Prümmer!" At long last, this centenary edition restores the superb English translation of 1956 in a fresh new typesetting, making Fr. Prümmer's original text much easier to navigate and more pleasant to read. The many citation errors that plagued earlier editions have been painstakingly corrected, and scores of additional citations have been added from Aquinas's Summa Theologiae, Denzinger's Enchiridion, and the Roman Catechism -- three of the author's favorite sources. The topical index has likewise been expanded and now includes technical moral terms of more recent use (such as "double effect") to allow for more rapid contemporary reference. After a brilliant introduction to the science of moral theology, part 1 explores the end of man and all aspects of human conduct, and part 2 examines the sacraments and sacramentals and their core importance to the Catholic moral life. These packed pages contain the traditional Catholic moral teachings on: - Law, conscience, sin, and the passions -- with their respective types, causes, and effects - Commandments and precepts, how to observe them and recognize their violation - Divine rights and obligations in Christian family life and civil society - Excommunication and other penalties - Indulgences and how to obtain them - Virtues and vices - Scandal and moral cooperation in evil - Right worship, secret societies, private property, capital punishment, sexuality, abortion, war - And much more! In our own time of widespread confusion and decay, Fr. Prümmer's Handbook is the definitive and complete Catholic source book of the Church's moral doctrine as it was received and taught before the laxity and innovations of the last century. Far more than a work of mere historical interest, this surprisingly relevant guide to Christian moral perfection is a treasure that will endure as long as there are souls seeking eternal life.

Book Catholicism and Democracy

Download or read book Catholicism and Democracy written by Emile Perreau-Saussine and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2023-05-02 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How the Catholic Church redefined its relationship to the state in the wake of the French Revolution Catholicism and Democracy is a history of Catholic political thinking from the French Revolution to the present day. Emile Perreau-Saussine investigates the church's response to liberal democracy, a political system for which the church was utterly unprepared. Looking at leading philosophers and political theologians—among them Joseph de Maistre, Alexis de Tocqueville, and Charles Péguy—Perreau-Saussine shows how the church redefined its relationship to the state in the long wake of the French Revolution. Disenfranchised by the fall of the monarchy, the church in France at first embraced that most conservative of ideologies, "ultramontanism" (an emphasis on the central role of the papacy). Catholics whose church had lost its national status henceforth looked to the papacy for spiritual authority. Perreau-Saussine argues that this move paradoxically combined a fundamental repudiation of the liberal political order with an implicit acknowledgment of one of its core principles, the autonomy of the church from the state. However, as Perreau-Saussine shows, in the context of twentieth-century totalitarianism, the Catholic Church retrieved elements of its Gallican heritage and came to embrace another liberal (and Gallican) principle, the autonomy of the state from the church, for the sake of its corollary, freedom of religion. Perreau-Saussine concludes that Catholics came to terms with liberal democracy, though not without abiding concerns about the potential of that system to compromise freedom of religion in the pursuit of other goals.
