Book Western European Liberation Theology

Download or read book Western European Liberation Theology written by Gerd-Rainer Horn and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2008-10-09 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Western European Liberation Theology is the first comprehensive survey of the development of a distinct, progressive variant of Catholicism in twentieth-century Western Europe. This Left Catholicism served to lay the basis for the subsequent events and evolutions associated with Vatican II. Initially emerging within the boundaries of Catholic Action, fuelled by the growing power and self-confidence of the Catholic laity, a series of challenges to received wisdom and an array of novel experiments were launched in various corners of Western Europe. The moment of liberation from Nazi occupation and world war in 1944/45 turned out to be the highpoint of these optimistic paradigm shifts. Concentrating on interrelated developments in theology, Catholic politics and apostolic social action, Gerd-Rainer Horn integrates evidence from Italian, French and Belgian national contexts. Drawing on his research in over twenty archives between Leuven and Rome, he highlights the role of organisations, social movements, and intellectual trends. The pivotal contributions of key individuals are assessed, from theologians such as Jacques Maritain and Emmanuel Mounier, to the millenarian activist priests, Don Zeno Saltini and Don Primo Mazzolari. In conclusion Horn suggests that first-wave Western European Left Catholicism served as an inspiration - and constituted a prototype - for subsequent Third World Liberation Theology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nineteenth-century female congregation founders could achieve levels of autonomy, power and prestige that were beyond reach for most women of their time. With a subject hidden for a long time behind a curtain of modesty and mystery, this book recounts the fascinating but ambiguous life stories of four Belgian religious women. A close reading of their personal writings unveils their conflicted existence: ambitious, engaged, and bold on the one hand, suffering and isolated on the other, they were both victims and promotors of a nineteenth-century ideal of female submission. As religious and social entrepreneurs these women played an influential role in the revival of the church and the development of education, health care and social provisions in modern Belgium. But, equally well, they were bound to rigid gender patterns and adherents of an ultramontane church ideology that fundamentally distrusted modern society.

Book A Democratic Catholic Church

Download or read book A Democratic Catholic Church written by Eugene C. Bianchi and published by Crossroad Publishing. This book was released on 1992 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Second Vatican Council proclaimed that the church is the "People of God". In this volume thirteen scholars and theologians, including Hans Kung, Elisabeth Schussler-Fiorenza, Jay Dolan, Philip Berryman, Charles Curran, as well as Rosemary Ruether and Eugene Bianchi, propose how to implement this idea. The contributors argue for a more democratic and participatory church. They maintain that the current structure of the church derives not from the mandate of Jesus Christ, but from the monarchies within which it existed in times past, and that it is long overdue for change. Further, the editors argue that "the issue of a democratic Catholic Church is not merely an academic debate. Rather it is a crucial hinge for opening the door to further reforms in the spirit of Vatican II. The quarter century since the council has been a long lesson in how needed change in the church can be derailed for lack of participational, democratic structures". What is at stake is the redemptive power and witness of the church. The time for reform is at hand, and it will only be accomplished by all the people of the church.
