Download or read book L Eden Entredit written by Patrick Laude and published by Peter Lang Incorporated, International Academic Publishers. This book was released on 1994 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
Download or read book The Faure Song Cycles written by Stephen Rumph and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2020-09-29 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gabriel Fauré’s mélodies offer an inexhaustible variety of style and expression that have made them the foundation of the French art song repertoire. During the second half of his long career, Fauré composed all but a handful of his songs within six carefully integrated cycles. Fauré moved systematically through his poetic contemporaries, exhausting Baudelaire’s Les fleurs du mal before immersing himself in the Parnassian poets. He would set nine poems by Armand Silvestre in swift succession (1878-84), seventeen by Paul Verlaine (1887-94), and eighteen by Charles Van Lerberghe (1906-14). As an artist deeply engaged with some of the most important cultural issues of the period, Fauré reimagined his musical idiom with each new poet and school, and his song cycles show the same sensitivity to the poetic material. Far more than Debussy, Ravel, or Poulenc, he crafted his song cycles as integrated works, reordering poems freely and using narratives, key schemes, and even leitmotifs to unify the individual songs. The Fauré Song Cycles explores the peculiar vision behind each synthesis of music and verse, revealing the astonishing imagination and insight of Fauré’s musical readings. This book offers not only close readings of Fauré’s musical works but an interdisciplinary study of how he responded to the changing schools and aesthetic currents of French poetry.
Download or read book Dire l interdit written by Raymond Mentzer and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2010-01-15 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Church discipline and the Reformed consistory, whether in Hungary, the Swiss world, France, The Netherlands or the British Isles, have become the subject of intense scholarly discussion. The fifteen essays gathered in this volume examine the process of censure and excommunication across Europe from the mid-sixteenth through the late eighteenth centuries. They reevaluate the relationship of women to ecclesiastical authority and explore the complex ways in which exclusion from the Lord’s Supper operated. Several contributors trace the decrease in excommunication over time; others underscore national differences in its nature and the surprising infrequency of application. Together, they offer a fresh, unanticipated and illuminating portrait of the reform of morals associated with John Calvin and his followers. Kingdon, Suzannah Lipscomb, Michelle Magdelaine, Françoise Moreil, Graeme Murdock, Judith Pollmann, Didier Poton, Salomon Rizzo, Andrew Spicer, Karen Spierling, Nicole Staremberg Goy, and Margo Todd.

Download or read book Temporalities of Modernism written by Carmen Borbély and published by Ledizioni. This book was released on 2023-03-22 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Temporalities of Modernism gathers fourteen scholars whose contributions readdress the very tenets of modernism by approaching its multifaceted relationship with time in a series of fresh and original essays. The contemporary energies behind the collection are rooted in the turbulence of the modernist age: relativity, irreversibility, duration, fragmentation, contingency, and the looming threat of the apocalyptic future. The collection includes geographical areas often neglected by the habitual reduction of modernist studies to English-speaking literary high modernism, or to the concentration of famous figures in the traditional capital of modernism—Paris. Thus it offers detailed presentations of Italian pre-WWI modernism, Czech Dadaism, or of Polish, Romanian, and Hungarian writers and artists. The borders also open in terms of genres and mediums, as the contributions are not limited to fiction, but examine the multi-faceted productions of modernist artists: poetry, theatre, painting, music, cinema, photography, etc. In addition, the limits are temporally stretched out as some contributions focus on more recent writers (such as Sylvia Plath) and their reactivation of modernist discoveries.
Download or read book La historia cultural written by Philippe Poirrier and published by Universitat de València. This book was released on 2015-05-16 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Download or read book Loving Yusuf written by Mieke Bal and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2008-09-15 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Mieke Bal reread the story of Joseph and Potiphar’s wife as an adult, she was struck by differences between her childhood memories of a moral tale and what she read today. In Loving Yusuf ̧ Bal seeks to resolve this clash between memory and text, using the same story, in which Joseph spurns the advance of his master’s wife who then falsely accuses him of rape, as her point of departure. She juxtaposes the Genesis tale to the rather different version told in the Qur’an and the depictions of it by Rembrandt and explores how Thomas Mann’s great retelling in Joseph and His Brothers reworks these versions. Through this inquiry she develops concepts for the analysis of texts that are both strange and overly familiar—culturally remote yet constantly retold. As she puts personal memories in dialogue with scholarly exegesis, Bal asks how all of these different versions complicate her own and others’ experience of the story, and how the different truths of these texts in their respective traditions illuminate the process of canonization.

Book excerpt: This book is published to coincide with an exhibition of the same name in the Museum Félicien Rops and the Maison de la Culture in Namur. From the trees of good and evil in manuscripts dating back to the Middle Ages, up to the symbolist vision of nineteenth-century artists, the tree has intrigued and fascinated. In our time, contemporary artists continue to be inclined towards this natural element, attempting to grasp its essence. The theme is an inexhaustible source of inspiration to various artistic disciplines, from painting and sculpture to video and photography. Text in English and French. 75 colour illustrations

Download or read book Beginnings written by Thierry Guillemin and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2023-05-26 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The language of emotions and symbols is, par excellence, that of poetry. Yet the Bible uses a language of symbols from nature or the history of Israel that call and respond in echo throughout its various books including those of the New Covenant. Beginnings uses poetry to bring out the interplay of symbols or the deeply human aspect of emotions present in texts of the First Testament; it explores also different human experiences. Therefore, it does not in itself require any particular knowledge of the Scriptures to be appreciated. However, as this knowledge can help with grasping the poems in all their dimensions, some notes may support the reader to do so. The texts were first written in French, and it seemed useful to put the original text in front of the translation, as the play of rhythms and sonorities often could not be rendered in the latter. However, the entanglement of symbolic games and the deep description of emotions that poetic language allows is fully kept in the English text, and thus all readers can appreciate the poems, letting the words penetrate them by the magic of poetry.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Charles Taylor delves into the poetry of the Romantics and their heirs, a foundation of his distinctive philosophy of language. Taylor holds that Romantic poetry responded to disenchantment: with old cosmic orders depleted, artists groped to articulate new meanings by bringing connections to life rather than merely reasoning abstractly about life.
