Book Spanishness in the Spanish Novel and Cinema of the 20th 21st Century

Download or read book Spanishness in the Spanish Novel and Cinema of the 20th 21st Century written by Cristina Sánchez-Conejero and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2009-10-02 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spanishness in the Spanish Novel and Cinema of the 20th-21st Century is an exploration of the general concept of “Spanishness” as all things related to Spain, specifically as the multiple meanings of “Spanishness” and the different ways of being Spanish are depicted in 20th-21st century literary and cinematic fiction of Spain. This book also represents a call for a re-evaluation of what being Spanish means not just in post-Franco Spain but also in the Spain of the new millennium. The reader will find treatments of some of the crucial themes in Spanish culture such as immigration, nationalisms, and affiliation with the European Union as well as many others of contemporary relevance such as time, memory, and women studies that defy exclusivist and clear-cut single notions of Spanishness. These explorations will help contextualize what it means to be Spanish in present day Spain and in the light of globalization while also dissipating stereotypical notions of Spain and Spanishness.

Book Barcelona and Its Rulers 1096 1291

Download or read book Barcelona and Its Rulers 1096 1291 written by Stephen P. Bensch and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2002-07-04 with total page 488 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume examines the early growth of Barcelona and the formation of its ruling classes. The city did not at first grow because of overseas trade but because of market-oriented agriculture and tribute from Islamic Spain. Only after a difficult adjustment did the city develop the commercial foundations which would later ensure its prosperity. Barcelona's patriciate rose to prominence during the second stage of growth, its rise forming part of a profound restructuring of territorial power in response to the 'feudal crisis' that challenged traditional authority throughout Catalonia. Patrician families did not model themselves after noble patrilineages, but forged marital alliances in which the wife's dowry played a fundamental role. In this new book the family structure of the patriciate receives close examination and many traditional assumptions about the nature of Mediterranean towns are challenged.

Book Colouring Textiles

  • Author : A. Nieto-Galan
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2013-04-17
  • ISBN : 9401710813

Download or read book Colouring Textiles written by A. Nieto-Galan and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 391 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Colouring Textiles is an attempt to provide a new cross-cultural comparative approach to the art of dyeing and printing with natural dyestuffs in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Divided into thematic chapters, it uncovers new data from the vast historical heritage of natural dyestuffs from a range of European cities, to present new historiographic insights for the understanding of this technology. Through a sort of anatomic dissection, the book explores the study and cultivation of dye-plants in botanical gardens and plantations, and the tacit values hidden in dyeing workshops, factories, laboratories, or national and international exhibitions. It metaphorically submits the natural dyestuffs of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries to a series of systematic historical tests, and traces back the circulation of those sources of colours through colonial spaces, dye works, cross-cultural networks, schools of artistic design, and science-based industries for the making of synthetic colorants. Colouring Textiles contributes to a better understanding of the role of natural dyestuffs in the processes of industrialization in Western Europe. Audience: Historians of science and technology, historians of chemistry, philosophers, economic historians, professional chemists, arts and crafts historians, and cultural anthropologists.

Book excerpt: Rudy Ricciotti was born in 1952 in Algier. He studied in Geneva and Marseilles before opening his own architectural office in Bandol (Bouches-du-Rhone) in 1980. His early works are characterized by a radical, carefree approach, displaying a variety of forms and full of energy. Since the beginning of the 1990s Ricciotti has been influenced by the Arte Povera and his buildings have become more austere and functional, making use of minimalist and "lowtech" solutions. With the opening of the concert hall in Potsdam, and the construction of a foot bridge in Seoul, Ricciotti has finally found international recognition. Our publication is a detailed yet critical analysis of his work to date. The first monograph on the work of Rudy Ricciotti whose architecture is extravagant yet radiates Mediterranean simplicity, is powerfully expressive yet gently ironic.
