C’est ce que font les deux sociologues François Dubet et Marie-Duru Bellat dans cet essai qui défend l'idée d'une trahison du système scolaire. Car si le populisme sonne à nos portes, si les passions tristes comme la haine et le ressentiment fleurissent, c’est aussi parce que l’école n’a pas tenu ses promesses. La massification scolaire qui s’ouvre au début des années 1960 a longtemps été associée à l’espoir d’égalité des chances et de progrès de l'esprit démocratique. Or les auteurs démontrent qu’aucun de ces engagements n’a été tenu : l’école a généré de nouvelles formes d’inégalités, plus subtiles. La hausse du niveau de diplômes n’a pas assuré à tous une meilleure insertion professionnelle, et l’ascenseur social donne au contraire le sentiment d’être en panne. Enfin, loin de faire progresser la confiance envers les institutions démocratiques, l’école nourrit chez les perdants de la compétition scolaire le ressentiment : ceux qui pensent que l’école les a méprisés et exclus finissent par rejeter les valeurs démocratiques qu’elle promeut. Le succès de l’autoritarisme, de la démagogie et de l’indifférence politique en témoignent. Bref, le long processus de massification scolaire n’a pas eu que des conséquences heureuses. L’identification des progrès de la scolarisation à ceux de la démocratie ne va plus de soi. Il faut donc changer profondément de point de vue sur l'école pour défendre la cohésion sociale et la démocratie.
