Actuelle et prospective à la fois, cette étude intéressera au premier chef les responsables de l’éducation dans les pays développés et dans les pays en développement, mais aussi le public plus large qui, d’une manière générale, se préoccupe de la situation de l’éducation — dans le monde d’aujourd’hui comme dans celui de demain.

The authors addressed several key questions on lifelong education: For and by whom? Of and for what? How can it be achieved? The editor's overview and discussion of basic issues and questions, and his working definition open the topic. P. Lengrand then looks at prospects and advocates that each person should try to implement basic principles at work. B. Suchodolski, noting Comenius' book "Panpaedia" and Dostoevsky's "Grand Inquisitor," protests the concept of education as a power of men over men--"It is worth living in order to learn!" Similarly, E. Gelpi sees withholding of education as an obstacle to sociocultural development. K. Richmond advocates a broad definition (education for all), while A. K. Stock stresses the need to seek out and serve the forgotten worldwide, or those excluded from access to learning. A. Pfluger discusses a unit-credit system, urging openness and continuity in adult education as prerequisites for lifelong learning. The book ends with a summary of theoretical and practical considerations based on the contributors' face-to-face discussions and analysis of the papers. (CP)

L'Education nouvelle n'a eu de cesse, depuis sa naissance au début du XXe siècle, de proposer les voies d'une autre pédagogie, pour adapter te système éducatif républicain au monde contemporain. Pestalozzi, Zay, Monod, Freinet, Capelle, Savary, Haby... autant d'hommes politiques ou de grands pédagogues qui ont tenté de réformer l'Ecole, mais chaque fois dans des situations expérimentales, exceptionnelles ou d'urgence. Certes, le contexte social et technique contemporain est différent de celui au lendemain de la Première Guerre, mais les enjeux demeurent les mêmes : changer l'homme, en renversant les rapports au savoir. C'est pourquoi il est intéressant de confronter les propositions et tes actions des pionniers de l'Ecole nouvelle au refus actuel de notre Ecole par une partie importante de la jeunesse. Un certain nombre de penseurs et de militants pensent que la solution aujourd'hui, comme hier, est de changer profondément l'Ecole pour l'adapter à un monde nouveau qu'il convient également de faire naître. Cet ouvrage, écrit au fil de l'actualité, témoigne de ce qu'il paraît déjà possible de faire dans l'esprit du mouvement ancien et toujours vivant de l'Education nouvelle.
