Ceci est accompli en essayant de démontrer que l’interaction de l’offre et de la demande aboutira à un équilibre général global. La théorie de l'équilibre général contraste avec la théorie de l'équilibre partiel, qui effectue une analyse d'une composante particulière d'une économie tout en maintenant le statu quo pour tous les autres aspects de l'économie. Les influences constantes sont considérées comme non économiques ou, pour le dire autrement, comme dépassant le cadre de l'étude économique, lorsque l'économie est décrite comme étant en équilibre général. Les impacts non économiques, en revanche, sont susceptibles de changer en réponse aux changements des facteurs économiques ; par conséquent, l'exactitude des prévisions faites par un modèle d'équilibre peut dépendre de l'indépendance des composantes économiques par rapport aux composantes non économiques.
