Book Dante the Lyric and Ethical Poet

Download or read book Dante the Lyric and Ethical Poet written by Zygmunt G. Bara'nski and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-12-02 with total page 481 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This book presents the proceedings of the fifth meeting of the International Dante Seminar. As with previous volumes, the proceedings also include a carefully edited account of the extensive discussions which followed the presentations. The papers, given by some of the leading international scholars of the poet - from Italy, the UK and the USA - address four major topics of particular concern to present-day Dante studies: Dante as a lyric poet; Dante as an ethical poet; Dante and the Eclogues; and Dante in nineteenth-century Britain. These topics reflect both areas which are currently the subject of heated critical debate (several editions of the lyric poems are in preparation, and the ethical dimension of Dantes works is very much under discussion) and areas which are long overdue a reassessment (Dantes remarkable revival of Latin pastoral poetry, and the extraordinary British contribution to Dante studies in the nineteenth century). As this set of conference proceedings makes clear, in Dante and in his legacy, ethics and poetry are inseparable. The contributors include Paola Allegretti, Michael Caesar, Paolo Falzone, Manuele Gragnolati, Claudio Giunta, Claire Honess, Robin Kirkpatrick, John Lindon, Lino Pertile, Justin Steinberg, Claudia Villa, and Diego Zancani."

Book Playing with Gender

Download or read book Playing with Gender written by Maggie Gunsberg and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-12-02 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This work takes gender as its point of entry into the comedies of Carlo Goldoni (1707-93). The dramatization of femininity and masculinity is explored in conjunction with that of other social categories (class, the family, and age). The plays reinforce the patriarchal association of femininity with the body, with spectacle, and with theatricality, while the dramatic backdrop of Venice and carnival provides a context for the staging of issues relating to identity, disguise and fashion. In the plays, pretence and theatricality vie with bourgeois Enlightenment values of morality, honesty and respectability to produce dramatic tension with distinct gender implications."

Book The Italian Opera Singers in Mozart s Vienna

Download or read book The Italian Opera Singers in Mozart s Vienna written by Dorothea Link and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 2022-11-22 with total page 459 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dorothea Link examines singers’ voices and casting practices in late eighteenth-century Italian opera as exemplified in Vienna’s court opera from 1783 to 1791. The investigation into the singers’ voices proceeds on two levels: understanding the performers in terms of the vocal-dramatic categories employed in opera at the time; and creating vocal profiles for the principal singers from the music composed expressly for them. In addition, Link contextualizes the singers within the company in order to expose the court opera's casting practices. Authoritative and insightful, The Italian Opera Singers in Mozart's Vienna offers a singular look at a musical milieu and a key to addressing the performance-practice problem of how to cast the Mozart roles today.

Book The Expulsion of the Triumphant Beast

Download or read book The Expulsion of the Triumphant Beast written by Giordano Bruno and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2024-06-03 with total page 467 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published in London in 1584, The Expulsion of the Triumphant Beast is Giordano Bruno’s first work of moral philosophy. It is dedicated with a long Explicatory Letter to Elizabeth I’s most cultured courtier, Sir Philip Sidney. It is a book about moral reform, expelling the beasts of evil, and putting virtues in their place. Its theme is presented as an allegorical drama in which ancient myths assume modern meanings questioning the ways in which moral and religious reform have been conceived in both the ancient world and the cultures of Renaissance Europe. This new Italian text, based on the original printed text of 1584 held in the British Library, presents a less modernized version than those presently available, while maintaining a modern page format. The aim is to provide a text closer to the sound of Bruno’s original mix of classical Tuscan Italian and Neapolitan dialectical forms. This edition also presents a new translation designed to render Bruno’s complex and baroque Italian into easily readable modern English. Hilary Gatti introduces The Expulsion of the Triumphant Beast, underlining Bruno’s meta-literary reflection on the nature of allegory and myth as well as the dramatic structure of his text. Drama, philosophy, and religion combine in this work to give an epic dimension to the perennial cosmic battle between evil and good.
