Au sein de la période coloniale tant considérée homogène, il retrace les différents styles et modes ayant forgé les façades urbaines et les quartiers de la villes pendant les 132 ans de colonisation. Enfin, l'ouvrage se termine par une questionnement sur l'identité culturelle dans la période postcoloniale.
