Book excerpt: In this startling, intensively researched book, bestselling historian Paul Kengor shines light on a deeply troubling aspect of American history: the prominent role of the "dupe." From the Bolshevik Revolution through the Cold War and right up to the present, many progressives have unwittingly aided some of America's most dangerous opponents. Based on never-before-published FBI files, Soviet archives, and other primary sources, Dupes exposes the legions of liberals who have furthered the objectives of America's adversaries. Kengor shows not only how such dupes contributed to history's most destructive ideology—Communism, which claimed at least 100 million lives—but also why they are so relevant to today's politics.

Book Evolution by Gene Duplication

Download or read book Evolution by Gene Duplication written by Susumu Ohno and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-12-11 with total page 171 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is said that "necessity is the mother of invention". To be sure, wheels and pulleys were invented out of necessity by the tenacious minds of upright citi zens. Looking at the history of mankind, however, one has to add that "Ieisure is the mother of cultural improvement". Man's creative genius flourished only when his mind, freed from the worry of daily toils, was permitted to entertain apparently useless thoughts. In the same manner, one might say with regard to evolution that "natural selection mere(y tnodifted, while redundanry created". Natural selection has been extremely effective in policing alleHe mutations which arise in already existing gene loci. Because of natural selection, organisms have been able to adapt to changing environments, and by adaptive radiation many new species were created from a common ancestral form. Y et, being an effective policeman, natural selection is extremely conservative by nature. Had evolution been entirely dependent upon natural selection, from a bacterium only numerous forms of bacteria would have emerged. The creation of metazoans, vertebrates and finally mammals from unicellular organisms would have been quite impos sible, for such big leaps in evolution required the creation of new gene loci with previously nonexistent functions. Only the cistron which became redun dant was able to escape from the relentless pressure of natural selection, and by escaping, it accumulated formerly forbidden mutations to emerge as a new gene locus.

Book Modeling and Analysis of Bio molecular Networks

Download or read book Modeling and Analysis of Bio molecular Networks written by Jinhu Lü and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-12-06 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book addresses a number of questions from the perspective of complex systems: How can we quantitatively understand the life phenomena? How can we model life systems as complex bio-molecular networks? Are there any methods to clarify the relationships among the structures, dynamics and functions of bio-molecular networks? How can we statistically analyse large-scale bio-molecular networks? Focusing on the modeling and analysis of bio-molecular networks, the book presents various sophisticated mathematical and statistical approaches. The life system can be described using various levels of bio-molecular networks, including gene regulatory networks, and protein-protein interaction networks. It first provides an overview of approaches to reconstruct various bio-molecular networks, and then discusses the modeling and dynamical analysis of simple genetic circuits, coupled genetic circuits, middle-sized and large-scale biological networks, clarifying the relationships between the structures, dynamics and functions of the networks covered. In the context of large-scale bio-molecular networks, it introduces a number of statistical methods for exploring important bioinformatics applications, including the identification of significant bio-molecules for network medicine and genetic engineering. Lastly, the book describes various state-of-art statistical methods for analysing omics data generated by high-throughput sequencing. This book is a valuable resource for readers interested in applying systems biology, dynamical systems or complex networks to explore the truth of nature.

Book Proceedings of the 1987 International Conference on Parallel Processing

Download or read book Proceedings of the 1987 International Conference on Parallel Processing written by Sartaj Sahni and published by Penn State University Press. This book was released on 1987 with total page 950 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Interest in the field of parallel processing has soared in this decade. Response to the annual conference held at Pheasant Run is clear proof: in the early 1980s just over 100 papers were submitted each year; in 1987 over 400 papers were considered. Such heightened interest is both gratifying and challenging in that the increasingly demanding applications in science, medicine, and industry that result from these studies are dependent upon the parallel systems as computing resources. The studies in this volume describe recent advances in all aspects of parallel/distributed logic circuits, impact of VLSI to parallel processor architecture, various concurrent-, distributed-, parallel-, pipeline-, or multiple-processor architectures; processor memory interconnections; computer networks; distributed databases; reliability and fault tolerance, modeling and simulation techniques; performance measurements; operating systems; languages; algorithms; mathematical analysis; and various application studies A rigorous standard governed the paper selection process in an effort to insure that the proceedings reflect the state of the art in parallel processing theory, design, and applications. Of vital interest to researchers, engineers, scientists, programmers, systems analysts, managers, and other interested in the design and application of parallel/distributed processors and processing.

Book The Radical Use of Chance in 20th Century Art

Download or read book The Radical Use of Chance in 20th Century Art written by Denis Lejeune and published by Rodopi. This book was released on 2012-01 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To many, chance and art are antagonistic terms. But a number of 20th century artists have turned this notion on its head by attempting to create artworks based on randomness. Among those, three in particular articulated a well-argued and thorough theory of the radical use of chance in art: André Breton (writer), John Cage (composer) and François Morellet (visual artist). The implications of such a move away from established aesthetics are far-reaching, as much in conceptual as in practical terms, as this book hopes to make clear. Of paramount importance in this coincidentia oppositorum is the suggested possibility of a correlation between the artistic use of chance and a system of thought itself organised around chance. Indeed placing randomness at the centre of one’s art may have deeper philosophical consequences than just on the aesthetical level.
