Book Goldoni as Librettist

    Book Details:
  • Author : Ted Emery
  • Publisher : Peter Lang Incorporated, International Academic Publishers
  • Release : 1991
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 280 pages

Download or read book Goldoni as Librettist written by Ted Emery and published by Peter Lang Incorporated, International Academic Publishers. This book was released on 1991 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Carlo Goldoni (1707-1793) is widely recognized as one of Italy's finest playwrights, but his production for the operatic theatre is much less well known. While musicologists have established the importance of Goldoni's innovations in the form of the comic libretto, literary scholars have tended to see the drammi giocosi as at best a pale reflection of the plays, and at worst a distortion of the «real» Goldoni. In Goldoni as Librettist, Emery traces the complex web of relationships between plays and libretti, illustrating the ways in which the author used his operas to prepare for the comedies, or to experiment with themes to which the plays were closed. This reading of Goldoni's operatic texts not only confirms their status as a form of literary activity, but also allows us to more fully understand Goldoni's development as a playwright.

Book The Theatre of Drottningholm Then and Now

Download or read book The Theatre of Drottningholm Then and Now written by Willmar Sauter and published by University of Exeter Press. This book was released on 2015-08-13 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Thetre of Drottiningholm - Then and Now tells the story of the Drottningholm Court Theatre, from 1766 - the year it was built - to today's performances presented during annual summer festivals. The court theatre was rarely used after Gustav III's death in 1792 until it was rediscovered in 1921, luckily for us, because this has meant that not only the auditorium but also the stage machinery, painted flats and backdrops have been almost perfectly preserved. This book provides a vivid picture of the Drottningholm Court Theatre: the architecture, the many different activities which took place here during the Gustavian era, and the use made of the theatre since its rediscovery to explore the nature of Baroque performance....The Court Theatre at Drottninholm is a work of art in the sense John Keats envisioned in his Ode to A Grecian Urn: 'a thing of beauty is a joy forever.' But it is more than an objet d'art, an antiquarian piece to be enjoyed by experts, Its aesthetic values should not make us forget that it is also a historical document, which adds to our knowledge about how theatre was performed and...experienced during the epoch when Carl Fredrik Adelcrantz created it. --Cover.

Book The Habsburg Empire 1700 1918

Download or read book The Habsburg Empire 1700 1918 written by Jean Berenger and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-09-19 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the eagerly awaited second volume of Jean Bérenger's history of the Habsburgs. It covers the last two centuries of their rule and provides a compelling account of the fluctuations of Habsburg dynastic power and its disintegration after World War One. Bérenger gives a rich portrait of Habsburg greatness under Maria Theresa and Joseph II and shows how their successors proved more adroit at riding the tide of nationalism in their multi-ethnic empire than is often recognised.

Book Italian Opera Since 1945

Download or read book Italian Opera Since 1945 written by Raymond Fearn and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-06-11 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1988. Italy, the birthplace of opera in the late sixteenth century, has in recent decades seen remarkable and vital musical growth, with composers as diverse as Luciano Berio and Nino Rota, Luigi Nono and Sylvano Bussotti, Giacomo Manzoni, Bruno Maderna and Salvatore Sciarrino. The musical theatre has figured prominently in the work of Italian composers during this period, ranging from operas conceived in a traditional mode to works of a Music Theatre variety, and in style from popular to avant-garde. In this book Raymond Fearn surveys this Italian musico-theatrical phenomenon in the period since the Second World War, examining a wide range of works such as Nono's Intolleranza and Al Gran Sole Carico d'Amore, Berio's Passaggio and Un re in ascolto, Manzoni's Atomtod and La Sentenza and Castiglioni's Oberon and The King's Masque, and places these developments within a cultural and theatrical context
