Book ANALYSIS OF INTERNATIONAL SOCIAL POLICIES

Download or read book ANALYSIS OF INTERNATIONAL SOCIAL POLICIES written by JULIEN BOKILO and published by American Academic Press. This book was released on 2021-12-13 with total page 211 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Main idea: Contribution of transnational transfers in the construction of national social policies. Through the main idea of the book, we begin by defining the notion of decline, to identify consequences of the decline of political authority with regard to social problems, to better analyze the importance of the address of countries in development path towards international donors. In addition, we used Policy Transfer Studies (PTS) to show how the contributions of transnational transfers on the development of national social policies are considered as the lever for the integration of developing countries. But, in other words, these countries are considered as the places of fixation where interdependencies between public and private actors are consolidated, where rules of action are negotiated thanks to the agreements, conventions, which we have analyzed throughout, through two types of partnership, namely: bilateral and multilateral, through public-public, public-private, private-private (INGO-International Institution) partnerships. Finally, we carried out an evaluation, in order to subsequently identify some perspectives encouraged by transnational contributions on the social policies of developing countries.

Book Development and Work Ethic in sub Saharan Africa

Download or read book Development and Work Ethic in sub Saharan Africa written by Toon van Eijk and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2009-06-25 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lagging economic development in Africa has been attributed to many causes, but the prevailing work ethic is never mentioned as a possible constraint to development in the formal literature. Obviously this is a politically and culturally sensitive issue. A discussion of the work ethic can easily degenerate into paternalistic and racist reflections. The author manages to discus it in a social-scientific manner without lapsing into platitudes. In this book development is seen as a process of long-term evolution in which people are central. Development is about changes in individual and collective behaviour. The work ethic is a crucial component of human behaviour. The work ethic is discussed in relation to the process of disciplining to labour in North-Western Europe, and in relation to issues such as gender, Christianity, the invention of the mechanical clock, the Industrial Revolution, geography, the state, the mimetic desire and the belief in a technological fix.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the industrialized nations of the global North, well-funded agencies like the CDC attend to citizens' health, monitoring and treating for toxic poisons like lead. How do the under-resourced nations of the global South meet such challenges? In Edges of Exposure, Noémi Tousignant traces the work of toxicologists in Senegal as they have sought to warn of and remediate the presence of heavy metals and other poisons in their communities. Situating recent toxic scandals within histories of science and regulation in postcolonial Africa, Tousignant shows how decolonization and structural adjustment have impacted toxicity and toxicology research. Ultimately, as Tousignant reveals, scientists' capacity to conduct research—as determined by material working conditions, levels of public investment, and their creative but not always successful efforts to make visible the harm of toxic poisons—affects their ability to keep equipment, labs, projects, and careers going.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book A Convergence of Civilizations

Download or read book A Convergence of Civilizations written by Youssef Courbage and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2011-06-07 with total page 183 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We are told that Western/Christian and Muslim/Arab civilizations are heading towards inevitable conflict. The demographics of the West remain sluggish, while the population of the Muslim world explodes, widening the cultural gap and all but guaranteeing the outbreak of war. Leaving aside the media's sound and fury on this issue, measured analysis shows another reality taking shape: rapprochement between these two civilizations, benefiting from a universal movement with roots in the Enlightenment. The historical and geographical sweep of this book discredits the notion of a specific Islamic demography. The range of fertility among Muslim women, for example, is as varied as religious behavior among Muslims in general. Whether agnostics, fundamentalist Salafis, or al-Qaeda activists, Muslims are a diverse group that prove the variety and individuality of Islam. Youssef Courbage and Emmanuel Todd consider different degrees of literacy, patriarchy, and defensive reactions among minority Muslim populations, underscoring the spread of massive secularization throughout the Arab and Muslim world. In this regard, they argue, there is very little to distinguish the evolution of Islam from the history of Christianity, especially with Muslims now entering a global modernity. Sensitive to demographic variables and their reflection of personal and social truths, Courbage and Todd upend a dangerous meme: that we live in a fractured world close to crisis, struggling with an epidemic of closed cultures and minds made different by religion.
