Download or read book Community Rights and Corporate Responsibility written by Liisa North and published by Between The Lines. This book was released on 2006 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Canadian mining activity in Latin America has exploded over the past decade and a half. Investors have responded to neoliberal policies of deregulation, privatization, state-downsizing, and export promotion encouraged by leading capitalist nations and international financial institutions such as the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank. The result, predictably, has been sharp conflicts between the communities affected by mining and their advocates on one side, and the transnational mining companies supported by the local state and the Canadian government on the other. This collection, the most comprehensive in the English-language to date, investigates these conflicts in Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Mexico, and Nicaragua. Contributors address the related sustainable development, community, corporate, legal, and social issues. A valuable contribution to Latin American development studies, this collection will prove of interest to students and specialists in the field, journalists, NGOs, and policymakers.
Download or read book Desertification Causes Impacts and Consequences written by Roy H. Behnke and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-12-07 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It now seems incontrovertible (as Alessandra Giannini has demonstrated) that the series of Sahelian droughts that began in the early 1970s were driven by changes in sea surface temperatures and that they were not caused by local land use mismanagement in the Sahel itself. Combined with the apparent re-greening of the Sahel, these findings effectively close a long-standing policy and scientific debate (in which the lead authors of this book participated) on the causes and extent of desertification in the Sahel. The opportunity now presents itself to treat this debate as a historical object lesson in the relationship between science, the formation of public opinion, and international policy-making in the context of climate change. In short, what might the ‘great Sahelian desertification boondoggle’ have to tell us about current attempts to come to grips with climate change?

Download or read book A Vital Rationalist written by Georges Canguilhem and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2000-04-04 with total page 496 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Georges Canguilhem is one of France's foremost historians of science. Trained as a medical doctor as well as a philosopher, he combined these practices to demonstrate to philosophers that there could be no epistemology without concrete study of the actual development of the sciences and to historians that there could be no worthwhile history of science without a philosophical understanding of the conceptual basis of all knowledge. A Vital Rationalist brings together for the first time a selection of Canguilhem's most important writings, including excerpts from previously unpublished manuscripts and a critical bibliography by Camille Limoges. Organized around the major themes and problems that have preoccupied Canguilhem throughout his intellectual career, the collection allows readers, whether familiar or unfamiliar with Canguilhem's work, access to a vast array of conceptual and concrete meditations on epistemology, methodology, science, and history. Canguilhem is a demanding writer, but Delaporte succeeds in marking out the main lines of his thought with unrivaled clarity; readers will come away with a heightened understanding of the complex and crucial place he holds in French intellectual history.

Download or read book Selected Issues in Maritime Law and Policy written by Maximo Quibranza Mejia and published by Nova Science Publishers. This book was released on 2013 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The international nature of the maritime industry means that ships are subject to the varying legal jurisdictions of the ports in which they call. Law and policy provide a framework necessary for establishing order and harmonization in a highly regulated global industry; they are vital instruments for promoting the safety, security, and commercial efficiency of shipping as well as the protection of the marine environment, in an atmosphere of competing national-contra-global as well as private-contra-public interests. Furthermore, it is of great importance that the legal and policy aspects of maritime activities closely follow the rapid pace of technological and commercial developments. Students and practitioners in maritime law and policy need to be constantly familiar with trends in the shipping industry and possess a solid comprehension of the international legal regimes that not only encourage the sustainable development of global maritime commerce, but also regulate its conduct. This book is a collection of essays dedicated to Professor Proshanto Kumar PK Mukherjee, one of the leading lights in the area of maritime law and policy. It presents a mix of background information and insightful analysis by leading experts on a wide range of some of the most pressing and contemporary maritime law and policy topics -- ranging from the development of maritime standards (Mbiah) to the challenges of operating flags of convenience (Mensah), from the latest convention on the international carriage of goods by sea (Basu Bal) to liability and compensation issues related to ship-source marine pollution (Jacobsson, Xu, Kojima), from the intricacies of marine insurance law (Thomas, Gauci) to the vagaries of the conflict of laws (Manolis), and from the legal framework for maritime piracy (Menefee) to the linkages between political stability, economic development, and piracy (Mejia).

This book was released on 2029-01-15 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Political Economy of Corporate Responsibility in India takes on the topic of socioeconomic development in India under different economic governance frameworks since the 1950s, and how each has given rise to a large number of interrelated concerns, including impacts on employment and distribution of income, emergence of new forms of vulnerabilities, weakened state structures, imbalanced demographics with sub-national disparities, environmental and biomass degeneration, and dismal performance on several human development indicators. The book includes information on the ways that institutional actors, including private sector corporations, have responded to these challenges. In addition, the increased focus and pressures by campaigners on corporations to not only minimize harm, but also maximize benefits emanating from their operations has put many leading global corporations in the line of fire, creating a profound influence in many countries, including India. This book documents these experiences in the Indian context and identifies the scope and limitations of corporations to address such concerns. Includes a political economy framework to analyze corporate social responsibility (CSR) Integrates analytical constructs on CSR in India with changes in the conditions of businesses in India using empirical data and case studies Links CSR practices in India with changing corporate management practices, their evolution, and a comparative analysis using the Anglo-Saxon model of corporate governance

Download or read book Le r le du juge dans le d veloppement du droit de l environnement written by Olivier Lecucq and published by Emile Bruylant. This book was released on 2008 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
Download or read book Le droit d acc s la justice en mati re d environnement written by Collectif and published by Presses de l’Université Toulouse Capitole. This book was released on 2018-03-13 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
