Book excerpt: KYLIE is a major new biography, telling the life story of Kylie Minogue, a true pop icon, now back on our screens in hit show The Voice. Everybody loves Kylie. No popular figure in modern culture deserves the description 'iconic' more than the star whose name alone evokes more than twenty-five years of memories. KYLIE charts the incredible journey of a complex and misunderstood woman from the suburbs of Melbourne, who was never the girl next door. She captured our hearts as Charlene Mitchell in Neighboursbefore rising to her position today as a member of music royalty. She is more popular than ever thanks to her acclaimed role as a judge on The Voice. Her phenomenal success was threatened in 2005, when she was diagnosed with breast cancer. The world held its breath as she braved surgery and chemotherapy before she was given the all clear. Her honesty and dignity throughout gained her universal respect and improved awareness of the disease among young women - the Kylie Effect. KYLIE is the essential book for those wanting to learn more about how she has continually reinvented herself - as teen actress, chart star, creative musician, sex goddess, gay icon, style queen and female role model. It reveals her true loves, the men who have brought her disappointment and those that have helped her achieve the status of most popular female icon of our times. KYLIE is an inspirational celebration of a star we should never take for granted.

Book excerpt: Kylie first made it big in the late 1980s as Charlene in the Australian soap "Neighbours". Moving to England, she made the transition to pop sensation when she worked with producers Stock, Aitken and Waterman. When the hits dried up in the 1990s, Kylie was faced with her first major challenge. She had to reinvent herself for a new generation of fans. Stepping out of the shadow of her producers, she bravely forged her own path as an independent performer. But though everyone was still talking about her, she had to face the fact that she wasn't at the top any more. And so she reinvented herself again in the early 2000s as a disco diva - and this time, her career, which appeared to be in gentle but terminal decline, was turned around dramatically. Songs such as "Spinning Around" and "Can't Get You Out Of My Head" were pop classics and provided reason enough for the public that had always held her in huge affection to fall in love all over again. Kylie-mania spread all over the world and her reputation was sealed - she was an international superstar. After her traumatic battle with breast cancer, the Aussie diva came back stronger and sexier than ever, putting on a breath-taking comeback with her ever-elaborate Showgirl tour. Now, still a firm favourite with the public, Kylie Minogue can do no wrong. And twenty years on from the release of her first single "Loco-Motion", with over 40 million records sold and her tenth studio album released, she is showing no signs of slowing down. The Queen of Pop is definitely here to stay - this is her story.

Book Good As You

    Book Details:
  • Author : Paul Flynn
  • Publisher : Random House
  • Release : 2017-04-27
  • ISBN : 1473529174
  • Pages : 364 pages

Download or read book Good As You written by Paul Flynn and published by Random House. This book was released on 2017-04-27 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ‘One of the most important books about gay culture in recent times’ The Quietus Long-listed for the Polari First Book Prize In 1984 the pulsing electronics and soft vocals of Smalltown Boy would become an anthem uniting gay men. A month later, an aggressive virus, HIV, would be identified and a climate of panic and fear would spread across the nation, marginalising an already ostracised community. Yet, out of this terror would come tenderness and 30 years later, the long road to gay equality would climax with the passing of same sex marriage. Paul Flynn charts this astonishing pop cultural and societal U-turn via the cultural milestones that effected change—from Manchester’s self-selection as Britain’s gay capital to the real-time romance of Elton John and David Furnish’s eventual marriage. Including candid interviews from major protagonists, such as Kylie, Russell T Davies, Will Young, Holly Johnson and Lord Chris Smith, as well as the relative unknowns crucial to the gay community, we see how an unlikely group of bedfellows fought for equality both front of stage and in the wings. This is the story of Britain’s brothers, cousins and sons. Sometimes it is the story of their fathers and husbands. It is one of public outrage and personal loss, the (not always legal) highs and the desperate lows, and the final collective victory as gay men were final recognised, as Good As You.

Book The Australian Country Girl History Image Experience

Download or read book The Australian Country Girl History Image Experience written by Catherine Driscoll and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-03-23 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Australian Country Girl: History, Image, Experience offers a detailed analysis of the experience and the image of Australian country girlhood. In Australia, 'country girl' names a field of experiences and life-stories by girls and women who have grown up outside of the demographically dominant urban centres. But it also names a set of ideas about Australia that is surprisingly consistent across the long twentieth century despite also working as an index of changing times. For a long period in Australian history, well before Federation and long after it, public and popular culture openly equated 'Australian character' with rural life. This image of Australian-ness sometimes went by the name of the 'bush man', now a staple of Australian history. This has been counterbalanced post World War II and increased immigration, by an image of sophisticated Australian modernity located in multicultural cities. These images of Australia balance rather than contradict one another in many ways and the more cosmopolitan image of Australia is often in dialogue with that preceding image of 'the bush'. This book does not offer a corrective to the story of Australian national identity but rather a fresh perspective on this history and a new focus on the ever-changing experience of Australian rural life. It argues that the country girl has not only been a long-standing counterpart to the Australian bush man she has, more importantly, figured as a point of dialogue between the country and the city for popular culture and for public sphere narratives about Australian society and identity.
