Book excerpt: In 450 AD there was no United Kingdom, the Romans had left Britannia a generation before and the land was ruled by dozens of waring pagan kingdoms. This left the way open for different invaders from across the sea. Saxons arrived and violently overran Glouvia Kingdom in the southwest where nurse Kyla O'Knife was helping survivors of a recent plague, wounded warriors and civilians in distress. However, fate was about to deal Kyla a hand. Whether it was good or bad was still to be determined when Kyla was summoned to the dying king's bed and informed that she was his daughter by one of his wives. The entire royal family had been assassinated so after the king's death she became Crown Princess Kyla and ruler of Glouvia. This was a pyrrhic position for the Saxons now ruled the kingdom. They wanted her dead to discontinue the royal family line and she became a refugee. After rescuing enslaved women, Kyla who was helped by independent forest people, headed towards the hill country and sanctuary at a Christian monastery. Her troubles were not over for Llandover Monastery had been hit by the plague and only one monk survived. He was Brother Anthony who declared that the sacred building was for males only and women were not permitted. How did Kyla persuade Brother Anthony to let the women and herself in? What problems were there with a clash of beliefs and personalities? And what of the land left behind? Kyla was determined to help and set about to do just that. This is her story.

Book Body Count

    Book Details:
  • Author : Kyla Jamieson
  • Publisher : Harbour Publishing
  • Release : 2020-04-18
  • ISBN : 0889713715
  • Pages : 90 pages

Download or read book Body Count written by Kyla Jamieson and published by Harbour Publishing. This book was released on 2020-04-18 with total page 90 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this vital début, Kyla Jamieson sifts through the raw material of her life before and after a disabling concussion in search of new understandings of self and worth. Energized by the tensions between embodiment and dissociation, Body Count flickers between Vancouver and New York, passing through dreamscapes and pain states. Both earnest and irreverent, comedic and cosmic, these poems come from a full heart (“You came here / for a kind of truth / & I want to give / you everything”) that often finds its way obstructed by fear, anxiety, and the myriad ways trauma can pattern a life. Here, we see the work of removing the barriers between this heart and the world, and glimpse the labour it takes to heal a body and mind discarded by capitalism. One part rape culture protest anthem, one part long-distance love story, one part invisible illness testimony, and 100% epistolary intimacy, Body Count is a tonic for the times we live in, an open invitation to question the textures of our realities, the ways we inhabit our bodies, and the futures we envision for ourselves and our communities.

Book Young Adult Gothic Fiction

Download or read book Young Adult Gothic Fiction written by Michelle J. Smith and published by University of Wales Press. This book was released on 2021-06-15 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection is the first to focus exclusively on twenty-first-century young adult Gothic fiction. The essays demonstrate how the contemporary resurgence of the Gothic signals anxieties about (and hopes for) young people in the twenty-first century. Changing conceptions of young adults as liminal figures, operating between the modes of child and adult, can be mobilised when combined with Gothic spaces and concepts in texts for young people. In young adult Gothic literature, the crossing of boundaries typical of the Gothic is often motivated by a heterosexual romance plot, in which the human or monstrous female protagonist desires a boy who is not her ‘type’. Additionally, as the Gothic works to define what it means to be human – particularly in relation to gender, race, and identity – the volume also examines how contemporary shifts and flashpoints in identity politics are being negotiated under the metaphoric cloak of monstrosity.

Romantic? Right. He’s the older brother of my best friend, and no matter how hard either of us tries, we can’t seem to avoid each other. The problem started on the night my best friend and I graduated from high school. The party was joyous, a celebration. That night, I willingly gave Ricky a part of me—more than the kiss we told others about. Our deal was simple. No strings. Ricky kept his side of the bargain. Years have passed. Being from the same small town and crossing paths, I haven’t noticed how handsome he’s become or the way he’s filled out. If you ask me, he hasn’t noticed me either. Until he calls. I’m working for a finance company, one he’s now interviewing for. “Marilyn, will you be my date for the dinner with the partners? It’s only for one date and no strings.” The problem is my heart hasn’t kept my side of our bargain. I want at least one string. Do I agree to his proposal, or do I turn him down flat? Have you been Aleatha’d? Check out Aleatha’s 2024 Lighter One—ONE STRING—enemies-to-lovers, fake-date, little-sister’s-best-friend, second-chance, forbidden, stand-alone contemporary romance.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The sexual abuse of children impacts the most vulnerable members of society. It is the stories of all of these victims who suffered in silence that led us to join together to write this book, a book we hope will serve as a cautionary tale for children and adults alike. This book would not be possible without Kayla Harrison's brave revelations of the sexual abuse she suffered at the hands of her coach; it is these firsthand accounts that give all of us a chance to see explicitly how child sexual abuse can begin, persist, and is brought to an end. In the chapters that follow, we trace the course of Kayla's victimization and survival, weaving her story with our professional experience with hundreds of children, teens, and families to reveal what can be done to prevent and interrupt this damaging cycle"--

Book excerpt: Dive into this completed dark fantasy romance duology and enter a world filled with bloodthirsty syrens, vigilante pirates, and a darkness threatening the seas that both call home. The Seas of Caladhan have never been safe for a woman… The warning had never rang more true for Brigid, who, as a fifteen year old stowaway, was tossed into the sea by the ruthless sailors she’d sought passage from. Left to die at the hands of the sea, no one expected the sea to show her mercy instead. Transformed into a syren at the hands of the ocean’s goddess, Brigid joins the band of bloodthirsty women intent on making themselves be the things in the ocean that sailors feared. Caelum has spent his entire life spurning the reputation his father had built. After years suffering the cruelty of the pirate captain, saving others from a similar fate was ingrained in him. For every evil deed his father carries out, Caelum is there, following him in an ever raging attempt to stop him. When Caelum is thrown into the seas by unforeseen forces, he comes face to face with a girl from his past. One he’d thought long dead by his father’s own hands. Shocked to see a familiar face among the wreckage of their latest target, Brigid makes a split second decision to save Caelum rather than let the syrens drown him. Her actions don’t go unnoticed though, and she’s forced to make an impossible choice: leave behind the syrens and the home she’d built for herself, or prove her loyalty and kill the only man who’d ever shown her kindness. But there’s a darkness lurking on the seas Brigid and Caelum both call home, and the consequences of their choices will catch up to them sooner than anyone realizes. And they have no idea how intertwined their stories truly are. This eBook boxset includes: - The Syren's Mutiny (book 1) - The Captain's Revenge (book 2) - The Ocean's Mercy (prequel novella) - 3 bonus scenes
