Book excerpt: Stories and Studies of Strange Things: A hundred thoughts suggested by the book might be written down, but most of them would begin and end with this fact of strangeness. Kwaidan: Stories and Studies of Strange Things (1904) is a book by Lafcadio Hearn that features several Japanese ghost stories and a brief non-fiction study on insects. Hearn declares in his introduction to the first edition of the book, which he wrote on January 20, 1904, shortly before his death, that most of these stories were translated from old Japanese texts. He also states that one of the stories - Yuki-onna - was told to him by a farmer in Musashi Province, and his was apparently the first record of it, both by his own account and according to the research of modern folklorists. Riki-Baka is based on a personal experience of Hearn's. While he does not declare it in his introduction, Hi-Mawari - among the final narratives in the volume - seems to be a recollection of an experience in his childhood. In the last half of the book, Hearn lists collected Chinese/Japanese superstitions and his own personal thoughts on various members of the insect world. A Great Book for Lovers of the Truly Strange!

Book excerpt: A classic collection of spooky stories about spirits and goblins from ancient Japan. In the late 1800s, Lafcadio Hearn collected and retold strange and wonderful ghostly tales from old Japanese legends. In these stories, a blind poet must perform for members of a dead royal family; an old man gives up his life in exchange for blossoms on a wilting cherry tree; a man trying to comfort a strange woman crying in the dark recoils in horror on seeing her face; and a mandarin duck haunts the hunter who shot her companion. These are timeless and hair-raising stories in which humans and ghostly creatures co-exist. This new edition, with an introduction by Ruskin Bond, will leave readers spellbound.

Book Nights of the Round Table

Download or read book Nights of the Round Table written by Margery Lawrence and published by eBookIt.com. This book was released on 2021-02 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: NIGHTS OF THE ROUND TABLE is one of the last remaining completely forgotten ghost story collections of the 1920s, possibly because copies of the original book publication have, over the years, been virtually impossible to find. However, the twelve stories in this collection well justify a place alongside those written by E. F. Benson, A. M. Burrage, H. R. Wakefield, and Eleanor Scott, and their author, Margery Lawrence, possessed a story-telling skill comparable to each of those more famous writers. Margery Lawrence's narrative style will transport the reader to the comfortable, club-style atmosphere of a dining club of the 1920s. Her stories entertain, chill, even horrify--for here are twelve strange tales, undeservedly neglected tales, that deserve their place alongside the very best that the genre has to offer.

Book excerpt: "Mysticism, magic and alchemy all come into play in the creative process. For centuries musicians have tapped into things spiritual, embracing ritual, spell, incantation and prayer deeply into their life and work. Although the connection of music to mysticism has been consistent, well documented and productive, it is still shrouded in mystery and largely misunderstood. For this special edition, Aracana focuses on the nexus of mysticism and spirituality in the magical act of making music. Far from an historical overview or cold musicologist's study, these essays illuminate a fascinating and elusive subject via the eloquent voices of today's most distinguished modern practitioners and greatest adult thinkers, providing insights into the esoteric traditions and mysteries involved in the composition and performance of the most mystical of all arts."--Book cover.
