Ein erster Teil legt die Geschichte des Verständnisses und der Deutung der griechischen Tragödie im allgemeinen und des sophokleischen Oedipus Rex im besonderen zwischen 1500 und 1900 in ihrer gedanklichen Entwicklung und im Zusammenhang mit der europäischen Tragödientheorie analytisch dar. Ein zweiter Teil geht einigen zentralen und bis heute nicht eindeutig geklärten Postulaten der Tragödien- und Handlungstheorie des Aristoteles und deren neuzeitlichen Interpretationen nach, die das Verständnis der griechischen Tragödie Jahrhunderte lang bestimmt haben und durch die neueren Sophokles-Interpretationen wieder ins Zentrum der Diskussion gerückt sind. This approach opens up the possibility of considering whether the strategies adopted to influence contemporary society, to reflect that society and to come to terms with the Second World War are determined by the classification of these works as Kitsch or Kunst. The authors included are Alfred Andersch, Heinrich Böll, Hans Hellmut Kirst, Heinz G. Konsalik, Theodor Plievier and Erich Maria Remarque. The selected works deal specifically with the German soldier and officer, the fighting fronts, the home front and the connections between the German army and the National Socialist regime.

Book excerpt: As well as the open propaganda of the British Government produced during the Second World War, like the foreign language radio broadcasts of the BBC and the aerial propaganda leaflets dropped by the RAF over Occupied Europe, a secret underground propaganda battle was also fought. ‘The Black Art’ documents this history of Britain’s clandestine psychological warfare conducted against the Nazi’s Third Reich. This black propaganda was the work of several secret intelligence organisations including the Political Warfare Executive and Special Operations Executive. Using previously undiscovered primary source material ‘The Black Art’ charts the progress of and catalogues the range of propaganda leaflets covertly distributed across Occupied Europe and beyond to subvert the morale of German soldiers and civilians.
