Book Krishna Kumari The Tragedy of India

Download or read book Krishna Kumari The Tragedy of India written by English Subba Rao and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2024-07-25 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Krishna Kumari: The Tragedy of India introduces readers to the first English language play in modern India. Written in 1826 by English Subba Rao, one of the first Indians to be schooled in English, Krishna Kumari depicts the true story of a princess of Udaipur who is forced to commit suicide in order to end a war started by her suitors, the rulers of the neighboring kingdoms of Jaipur and Jodhpur. Tragically, her death proves to be in vain because the mercenaries recruited by the contending rulers nevertheless proceed to plunder the region. All three kingdoms are then compelled to seek the protection of the East India Company, bringing their independence to an end. Sharp and witty, Krishna Kumari was intended to warn Indian principalities against the follies that led to the downfall of the Rajputs. Unfortunately, the play scarcely saw the light of day. Angered by Subba Rao's opposition to their power, the British forced him to withdraw from public life. This is why audiences have never heard of Krishna Kumari-until now. Building on extensive archival research, this volume brings Subba Rao's pioneering drama back to life. The introductory essay by Rahul Sagar, a leading scholar of nineteenth century India, familiarizes readers with the remarkable characters in the play and the violent era in which they lived. By shedding light on Subba Rao's extraordinary life and career, it also reveals how important principalities like Tanjore and Travancore were in battling colonialism and shaping modern India.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kumari's Karma takes place in Srilanka, then called Ceylon, in the 1960s, just twelve years after the country gained independence from Britain. A place in transition, Srilanka was torn between Western values, and Christian and traditional beliefs. The little fishing village of Malhena mirrors this transition, and is the background for a tender and tragic love affair between a young school girl, Kumari, and the Catholic parish priest. Their love transcends reincarnation, warnings given in dreams, and forbidden Christian beliefs. The novel gathers momentum when an exorcism misfires, and the devil takes possession of Yakka, Kumari's tyrannical father, making him fatally shoot his oldest daughter's suitor. While Yakka is in prison, the richest man in the village tries to seduce his wife, as the middle-aged police inspector woos Kumari. In distress, Kumari turns to the parish priest. One morning, the two disappear, as the novel comes to its astonishing conclusion. Doreen Perera was born in Srilanka, and grew up in a small village that had many colourful characters. The people there fascinated her so much that some inhabit her novel. Brought up Catholic, she also accepts traditional beliefs. Her father worked for an English company, so she was also brought up with an English influence. Perera earned a master's in social work from the University of Washington, and married a fellow student. She moved with him to Germany, where the couple had three children. Now widowed, she still lives in Germany and is a part-time English teacher. She dedicates this book to her partner.

Book excerpt: The Life and Times of India's Greatest Tragedienne Vinod Mehta's riveting account of Meena Kumari's life begins with her death, weeks after the release of her swan-song Pakeezah. He goes back in time to Meetawala Chawl in Dadar East, where she was born, and to the flats and mansions she lived in, the studios where she worked, the hospital where she died and the cemetery she was cremated in. Having never met the star, Mehta talks to all those who were close to her - her much-maligned husband Kamal Amrohi, her sisters, her in-laws, her colleagues and co-stars - to create a complex portrait of a woman who carefully cultivated the image of someone 'unfairly exploited and betrayed by her lovers and lady luck'. It was a picture that blended with her on-screen persona. The media had, after all, already anointed her Hindi cinema's 'great tragedienne'. First published in 1972, this revised edition comes with a fresh introduction by the author and introduces a legend of Indian cinema to a new readership.
