Book Cultivated Plants and Domesticated Animals in their Migration from Asia to Europe

Download or read book Cultivated Plants and Domesticated Animals in their Migration from Asia to Europe written by Victor Hehn and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 1976-01-01 with total page 599 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New edition, prepared with a bio-bibliographical account of Hehn and a survay of the research into Indo-European prehistory by James P. Mallory. It was Hehn who for the first time combined the tools of comparative linguistics and the direct historical approach in order to discover the origins of domesticated animals and cultivated plants in the ancient world, tracing their diffusion from one culture to another. Hehn abandoned his contemporaries’often idealized and nationalistic image of the ancient Indo-Europeans, seeking instead to reconstruct early Indo-European society in agreement with the ethnological research of his day.

Book Authority Innovation and Early Modern Epistemology

Download or read book Authority Innovation and Early Modern Epistemology written by Martin McLaughlin and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 307 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Giordano Bruno (1548-1600), who died at the stake, is one of the best-known symbols of anti-establishment thought. The theme of this volume, which is offered as a collection of essays to honour the distinguished Bruno scholar Hilary Gatti, reflects her constant concern for the principles of cultural freedom and independent thinking. Several essays deal with Bruno himself, including an analysis of the Eroici furori, a study of his reception in relation to the group known as the Novatores, and discussions of several important aspects of his stay in England. The authors and texts discussed here are linked by a relentless interest in the question of authority and originality, and they range from literary figures such as Alberti (1404-72), Vasari (1511-74) and the proponents of quantitative verse in sixteenth-century England to controversial philosophers who, like Bruno, were condemned by the Church, such as Tommaso Campanella (1568-1639) and Giulio Cesare Vanini (1585-1619). Taken together, these chapters show how much that was new and revolutionary in early modern culture came from its confrontation with the past. Martin McLaughlin is Agnelli-Serena Professor of Italian at Oxford. Elisabetta Tarantino is a Teaching Fellow in the Department of Italian at the University of Warwick.

Book Poikile Physis

  • Author : Diego De Brasi
  • Publisher : Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG
  • Release : 2022-10-03
  • ISBN : 3110796856
  • Pages : 224 pages

Download or read book Poikile Physis written by Diego De Brasi and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2022-10-03 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Biological literature of the Roman imperial period remains somehow ‘underestimated’. It is even quite difficult to speak of biological literature for this period at all: biology (apart from medicine) did not represent, indeed, a specific ‘subgenre’ of scientific literature. Nevertheless, writings as disparate as Philo of Alexandria’s Alexander, Plutarch’s De sollertia animalium or Bruta ratione uti, Aelian’s De Natura Animalium, Oppian’s Halieutika, Pseudo-Oppian’s Kynegetika, and Basil of Caeserea’s Homilies on the Creation engage with zoological, anatomic, or botanical questions. Poikile Physis examines how such writings appropriate, adapt, classify, re-elaborate and present biological knowledge which originated within the previous, mainly Aristotelian, tradition. It offers a holistic approach to these works by considering their reception of scientific material, their literary as well as rhetorical aspects, and their interaction with different socio-cultural conditions. The result of an interdisciplinary discussion among scholars of Greek studies, philosophy and history of science, the volume provides an initial analysis of forms and functions of biological literature in the imperial period.

Book Nature and Language

Download or read book Nature and Language written by Ralf Norrman and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-08-19 with total page 331 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There exists an area of overlap where language and nature meet, and this book, first published in 1980, illuminates that fascinating territory. When real-world things, such as plants, are used in literature or language as symbols, these special signs have a double allegiance. They function as language but derive their meaning from nature. The authors trace the consequences of this, and show how it affects the character of the relevant areas of language and literature. Original and entertaining, this study cuts across a number of traditional disciplines. It should appeal not only to those interested in literature, language and semiotics, but also to students of philosophy, anthropology, classics, pictorial art, religion and folklore.

Book Silvae Book II

Download or read book Silvae Book II written by P. Papinius Statius and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2018-07-17 with total page 551 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The five books of the Silvae bring together the occasional verses which Statius wrote in addition to his two epics. In these short descriptive poems Statius elaborates features taken from various genres into an original whole, in which description and eulogy play important roles. The main themes of the poems of his second book are consolation after bereavement and the contrast between nature and culture. The present work contains a general introduction, a text of Silvae II, a bibliography, and an index, together with a verse-by-verse commentary on the poems of this second book. This is the first commentary on a book of the Silvae since Vollmer's commentary on the whole of the Silvae of 1898. Emphasis is here placed on interpretation and moreover chiefly on the literary and stylistic aspects of the poems, which, compared with the epic poetry of Statius and his contemporaries, have hitherto received relatively little attention.
