Book Sociolinguistics Soziolinguistik Volume 2

Download or read book Sociolinguistics Soziolinguistik Volume 2 written by Ulrich Ammon and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2008-07-14 with total page 907 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the publication of the first edition of the handbook Sociolinguistics/Soziolinguistik , the then young discipline has changed and developed considerably. The field has left behind its status as an interdiscipline between sociology and linguistics and is now a worldwide established field. Sociolinguistics continues to contribute to solving practical problems in areas such as language planning and standardization, language policy, as well as in language didactics and speech therapy. Moreover, new topics and areas of application have arisen from the autonomy of the discipline - these have been systematically and extensively included in the second edition of the handbook. The new overall concept depicts the regional and disciplinary representativity of sociolinguistic research while offering an encyclopedia-like useablitiy for all its readers. This includes theoretical depth and stringency for readers interested in theory, as well as methodical abundance and detail for empirical researchers. The descriptions of methods are so informative and precise that they can directly be used in the preparation of project planning. Similarly, the descriptions in the practice-oriented articles are so precise that users can accurately assess to what extent they can expect a certain sociolinguistic approach to help solve their problems. With an extensive description as its goal, the second edition of the handbook Sociolinguistics/Soziolinguistik takes into account the current standing of the discipline and the modified structure of the field.

Book excerpt: The focus on concepts of power and domination in societal structures has characterized sociology since its beginnings. Max Weber’s definition of power as “imposing one’s will on others” is still relevant to explaining processes in the arts, whether their production, imagination, communication, distribution, critique or consumption. Domination in the arts is exercised by internal and external rulers through institutionalized social structures and through beliefs about their legitimacy, achieved by defining and shaping art tastes. The complexity of how the arts relate to power arises from the complexity of the policies of artistic production, distribution and consumption—policies which serve to facilitate or hinder an aesthetic object from reaching its intended public. Curators, critics and collectors employ a variety of forms of cultural and artistic communication to mirror and shape the dominant social, economic and political conditions. Arts and Power: Policies in and by the Arts brings together diverse voices who position the societal functions of art in fields of domination and power, of structure and agency—whether they are used to impose hegemonic, totalitarian or unjust goals or to pursue social purposes fostering equal rights and grassroots democracy. The contributions in this volume are exploratory steps towards what we believe can be a more systematic, empirically and theoretically founded sociological debate on the arts and power. And they are an invitation to take further steps.

Book excerpt: To initiate its new Ph.D. Program in Transcultural German Studies, jointly offered by the University of Arizona and the University of Leipzig, the Department of German Studies at the University of Arizona organized an international conference on Transcultural German Studies in Tucson from March 29-31, 2007. Conference participants sought to define the nature of Transcultural German Studies. This new, interdisciplinary field of inquiry investigates the cultural landscapes of the German-speaking world in the light of globalization and inter- and transcultural contact. The contributions that comprise the volume are by scholars who work in a number of related fields, exploring transcultural phenomena - past and present - evident in selected literary, filmic, musical and historical texts.

Book Die d nischen Eufemiaviser und die Rezeption h fischer Kultur im sp tmittelalterlichen D nemark The Eufemiaviser and the Reception of Courtly Culture in Late Medieval Denmark

Download or read book Die d nischen Eufemiaviser und die Rezeption h fischer Kultur im sp tmittelalterlichen D nemark The Eufemiaviser and the Reception of Courtly Culture in Late Medieval Denmark written by Massimiliano Bampi and published by Narr Francke Attempto Verlag. This book was released on 2021-08-30 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. This book presents texts which are a unique testimony in Danish literature between the Late Middle Ages and the Early Modern period: the so-called Eufemiaviser (Eufemia poems), courtly verse romances, translated into Danish via Old French and Old Swedish sources in the later part of the 15th century. These texts have hardly been studied in Scandinavian research so far.

Book Narrated Communities Narrated Realities

Download or read book Narrated Communities Narrated Realities written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2015-05-19 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Culture studies try to understand how people assume identities and how they perceive reality. In this perspective narration, as a basic form of cognitive processing, is a fundamental cultural technique. Narrations provide the coherence, temporal organization and semantic integration that are essential for the development and communication of identity, knowledge and orientation in a socio-cultural context. In essence, Anderson’s “Imagined Communities” need to be thought of as “Narrated Communities” from the beginning. Narration is made up by what people think; and vice versa, narration makes up people's thoughts. What is considered "fictitious" or "real" no longer separates narratives from an "outside" they refer to, but rather represents different narratives. Narration not only constructs notions of what was “real” in retrospect, but also prospectively creates possible worlds, even in the (supposedly hard) sciences, as in e.g. the imaginative simulation of physical processes. The book’s unique interdisciplinary approach shows how the implications of this fundamental insight go far beyond the sphere of literature and carry weight for both scholarly and scientific disciplines.

Book The Representation of REFUGEES and MIGRANTS in European National Media Discourses from 2015 to 2017

Download or read book The Representation of REFUGEES and MIGRANTS in European National Media Discourses from 2015 to 2017 written by Annamária Fábián and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-05-30 with total page 371 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Though the refugee crisis was discussed in many countries e.g. in Greece, Hungary, Italy and Spain long before 2015, it began to receive cross- European press coverage only after Angela Merkel’s statement ‘Wir schaffen das!’ on the August 30th 2015 This data-based study focuses on, how journalists report on and leading politicians make statements about refugees, migrants and asylum seekers in media and frame these humans after Angela Merkels’ sentence in 2015 until the end of 2017. This volume uses mainly Corpus Linguistics but also Communicative Science for the analysis of labelling strategies and the usage of words, collocations and grammar systems used by journalists and politicians in different European countries in comparison. This empirical volume pictures language specific variation and change of labels. To enable a contrastive study between the press discourses of many European countries, every chapter analyses the data consisting of newspaper articles describing the discourse of a particular country, including discourses of some transit countries around the borders of the Schengen Area of the European Union, which barely have been covered in other studies.

Book Journal of Cultural Management and Cultural Policy Zeitschrift f r Kulturmanagement und Kulturpolitik

Download or read book Journal of Cultural Management and Cultural Policy Zeitschrift f r Kulturmanagement und Kulturpolitik written by Constance DeVereaux and published by transcript Verlag. This book was released on 2024-07-31 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Journal of Cultural Management and Cultural Policy offers international perspectives on a wide range of issues in cultural management and cultural policy research and practice. Attendance at museums and other arts organizations has decreased worldwide, even predating COVID. Audiences have been slow to return to performances and exhibits. Reasons include lack of access, lack of time, high cost, persistent inequities, poor engagement between arts organizations and the community, and even lack of interest. Concern about non-attendance has led to coining the term non-visitors. This issue seeks answers to this problem through two critical lenses of engagement and non-visitor studies.

Book Exploring the Boundaries of Bodiliness

Download or read book Exploring the Boundaries of Bodiliness written by Sigrid Müller and published by V&R Unipress. This book was released on 2013-12-11 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
