Book excerpt: This book studies the connections between the political reform of the Holy Roman Empire and the German lands around 1500 and the sixteenth-century religious reformations, both Protestant and Catholic. It argues that the character of the political changes (dispersed sovereignty, local autonomy) prevented both a general reformation of the Church before 1520 and a national reformation thereafter. The resulting settlement maintained the public peace through politically structured religious communities (confessions), thereby avoiding further religious strife and fixing the confessions into the Empire's constitution. The Germans' emergence into the modern era as a people having two national religions was the reformation's principal legacy to modern Germany.

In Britain conservatism was an accepted term of the political vocabulary, denoting a particular tradition of political thought and practice. In West Germany, by contrast, conservatism was a difficult concept for the young democracy to swallow. It carried a heavy antiliberal and antidemocratic burden and led people to question whether there was a place for conservatism within democratic culture after all. The Guardians of Concepts scrutinizes the debates about conservatism in the UK and the Federal Republic of Germany from the late 1940s to the early 1980s. Informed by historical semantics, it conceives of conservatism as a flexible linguistic structure, and shows the importance of language for the self-understanding of many conservatives, who not by chance, have regarded themselves as the guardians of concepts. The intense national and transnational debates about the meaning of conservatism had far-reaching consequences and continue to influence politics today.

This might lead to the assumption that business travellers are important customers to the tourism and travel industry and companies spend large sums on the trips of their employees. Indeed this impression can be proven right. Such 30-40% of all travel in Germany is business driven. In average companies spent 3,9% up to 5% of their yearly indirect cost on business travel. In a globalized market business travel is important and necessary for companies. It is an investment which influences the performance of a company positively if applied correctly. However as for every investment costs are attached which need to be validated upon their necessity and their cost-benefit ratio. Furthermore for business travel aspects like security, work time, employee wellbeing and other factors must be considered to increase the positive outcome for the company. There is a clear requirement for business travel and its management which will be explained in more detail during this thesis. However still many companies are not aware of the cost factor of business travel. Even if certain awareness has been established often still no clear strategy is in place to improve the value for money and avoid yearly cost increases. To create such a strategy it is necessary to have a good understanding of the travel industry, their relevant players and the companies travel structure. Motivation: Business travel management i.e. the professional organisation of business travel has just developed during the last 50 years. Globalisation and development of transportation caused a quick increase during the last years of the business travel industry. In 2008 German companies spend 46.6 billion Euros on business travel. The strategic management of business travel requirements however is still not common in every company. Though scientific, universal literature about business travel management is limited. Only a small number of authors give directions upon how to implement a complete travel management system in a company. In many cases the available theoretical literature has no practical tips for users. On the other hand there are many white papers, studies and articles available which are up to date, give practical tips, however only refer to one aspect of the travel process. It was further its most politically conservative region. The largest political party in Bavaria was the Christian Social Union (CSU), an extremely conservative, even reactionary, regional party. In the ensuing twenty years, the leaders of the CSU's small liberal wing (in particular Franz Josef Strauss, long-time party chair and the most colorful and polarizing politician in postwar Germany) broke with the anti-industrial traditions of Bavarian Catholic politics and made themselves useful to industry. With tactical brilliance the politicians pursued their individual political ambitions, rather than a coherent modernization strategy, which, by 1969, had turned Bavaria into a prosperous Land, the center of Germany's new aerospace, defense, and energy industries, with a disproportionate share of its research institutes.

Book excerpt: Rhenish capitalism is an ideal-typical model of capitalism which is characterised by a bank-centered financing system, close economic ties between banks and companies, a balance of power between shareholders and management, and a social partnership between unions and employers. The West German economy of the 1950s to the 1980s is the prime example of that model of capitalism which contrasts with the liberal Anglo-Saxon forms of capitalism. In accordance with recent debates about Varieties of Capitalism, the authors argue that research on capitalism should pay more attention to change over time. The book also claims to put the firm into the centre of analysis. The empirical contributions uncover the differences between French and German corporate governance practices comparing two European automobile producers (VW and Renault), analyse legal debates and practices of corporate control in post-war Germany, show the tension between national corporate governance and increasing internationalisation by reference to four major West German producers of chemicals, pharmaceuticals and fibres; and explore the opportunities encountered by German big banks vis-à-vis their customers from big industry. Furthermore, they show that coordinating culture in the supply relationship of the German automobile industry came under pressure at the end of the boom and stress the importance of communication processes as a basis for interest coordination in Rhenish capitalism. The chapters in this book were originally published as a special issue of the journal Business History.
