Download or read book Panhellenes at Methone written by Jenny Strauss Clay and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2017-04-10 with total page 387 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume discusses the multidimensional aspects of the unique, and so far unprecedented for Macedonia, 191 sherds from Methone in Pieria, dated to ca 700 BCE, which bear inscriptions, graffiti, and (trade)marks inscribed, incised, scratched and rarely painted. The 191 vessels were unearthed during excavations in ancient Methone in Pieria, the oldest colony of Greeks from Eretria in the north according to tradition. The Methone find is unique for two reasons. First, most of the pottery dates between 730 and 700 BCE, a period from which very few examples of Greek writing survives. And second, inscribed ceramics, scratched or painted, are extremely rare in Macedonia. This new evidence of inscribed pottery from Methone is invaluable for classical studies, and the papers of this volume contribute notably to current discussions about: the Greeks and the Greek language in Macedonia; the Greek colonization; the pottery trade and the early Greek transport amphoras; trade, the symposium, and other contexts for the development of writing; the ‘alphabets’ of Methone and the introduction of the alphabet in Greece; the dialect(s) of Methone in relation to the Greek dialects; early Greek writing, literacy, and literary beginnings.

Download or read book Paleoecology Biostratigraphy Paleoceanography and Taxonomy of Agglutinated Foraminifera written by Christoph Hemleben and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 1002 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Agglutinated foraminifera are among the most widely distributed and abundant groups of marine meiofauna in some environments (e. g. marshes, deep-sea). They are tolerant of environmental extremes, tending to live where the evolutionarily more advanced calcareous foraminifera cannot survive. However, largely because of historical reasons, the amount of scientific effort invested in this group has been small in comparison to studies of other marine organisms. The NATO Advanced Studies Institute conference on the paleoecology, biostratigraphy, paleoceanography and taxonomy of agglutinated foraminifera in TUbingen September 17-29, 1989, was a direct outgrowth of two previous workshops on agglutinated foraminifers held in Amsterdam in September 1981 (IW AF I) and in Vienna in June 1986 (IW AF 11). As such, the TUbingen conference constitutes the Third International Workshop on Agglutinated Foraminifera (IW AF III) and was organised to provide a platform for synthesizing the current state of knowledge on this group of organisms, and to strengthen interactions between basic research and applied micropaleontology. One of the main underlying themes of the conferen:e was to identify topics in the paleoecology, biostratigraphy, paleoceanography and taxonomy of agglutinated foraminifera which are in urgent need of further research. About 80 scientists and students from 5 continents participated in the TUbingen conference, which is one measure of the growth in interest in agglutinated foraminifers over the past decade. During four days of technical sessions, scientific results were communicated in the form of 34 oral presentations and 15 poster displays.

Download or read book Exchange Networks and Local Transformations written by Maria Emanuela Alberti and published by Oxbow Books Limited. This book was released on 2013 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout the local Bronze and Iron Age, European and Mediterranean societies appear to have been involved in complex systems of exchange networks which invariably affected local customs and historical developments. Archaeological evidence suggests social and economic phenomena, cultural expressions and technological skills stemmed from multifaceted encounters between local traditions and external influences. Examples of cultural openness and transcultural hybridisation seem to be more of a norm than an exception. The articles in the volume explore the dynamic relationship between regionally contextualized transformations and inter-regional exchange networks. Particular effort has been put in approaching the issue in a multidisciplinary perspective. Continental Europe and the Mediterranean may be characterized by specific development and patterns of relations, but the authors draw attention to how those worlds were not alien to each other and illustrate how common interpretative tools can be successfully applied and a comprehensive approach including both zones adopted.
Download or read book Manufacture and Measurement written by Anna Michailidou and published by de Boccard. This book was released on 2001 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Linear B tablets found at palatial sites across Greece and the Aegean islands, and archaeological discoveries of objetcs such as weights, attest to an early form of accounting and/or archiving. This book includes ten essays, plus an introduction by the editor, outlining sources of evidence for the counting measuring and recording of carft/industrial products in the prehistoric Aegean. Contributors look at evidence from the Neolithic period and at the Cretan hieroglyphic script before focusing on evidence from the Mycenaean period, including the recording of metal objects, craftsmen working in the palaces, textile recording and counting, condiments, perfume and dye plants, leather and other animal products. The papers draw heavily on the Linear B archives and less on artefacts.
Download or read book Emporia written by Robert Laffineur and published by Peeters. This book was released on 2005-12 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over eighty essays are presented in this substantial two-volume set, the proceedings of the 10th International Aegean Conference held at the Italian School of Archaeology in Athens in 2004. They demonstrate that none of the cultures of the Bronze Age Aegean and Eastern Mediterranean existed in isolation, instead the whole area was a marketplace, operating through a sophisticated network of trade and diplomacy. Following a series of methodological papers, the contributions investigate the influence of Mycenaeans and Minoans across the whole area drawing on archaeological, material, iconographic and written sources as well as ceramics and seals. Sections focus in turn on evidence from Crete, Asia Minor, Cyprus, the Levant, Egypt and the central Mediterranean, followed by three sections on arts and crafts, seals and written sources. The majority of papers are in English and many are illustrated.
