This book describes the negotiation and implementation of the armistice following the Korean war and the Korean phase of the Geneva conference (1954). It also analyzes some of the problems of coalition diplomacy. It thus foreshadows some of the problems that were encountered in conducting a UN-authorized war in the Gulf, and in the problems of negotiating a secure peace.

Download or read book The Korean War written by Allan R. Millett and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2001-09-01 with total page 858 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Korean War (1950?53) began as a conflict between North Korea and South Korea and eventually involved the United States and nineteen other nations. An estimated three million people lost their lives during the war. For Americans who think that only GIs and their United Nations contingent comrades fought effectively, The Korean War will be a surprising introduction to the valor and sacrifice of the South Korean army. This comprehensive view of the war from the South Korean perspective has not been previously available in English translation.øThe Korean War comprises three volumes. Volume 3 follows the final course of the war from fighting to cease-fire negotiations and the opening of truce talks. The establishment of the demilitarized zone, the end product of the armistice agreement, and the start of the cease-fire structure are described in detail. The volume concludes with an examination of the Political Conference held in Geneva, which sought a peaceful unification of the Korean peninsula.

Book The US DPRK Peace Treaty A Commentary

Download or read book The US DPRK Peace Treaty A Commentary written by Eric Yong Joong Lee and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-09-21 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book delivers an in-depth analysis of the US-DPRK Peace Treaty which will be concluded as a final result of the Korean Peninsula peace process that is currently ongoing. Since North Korea launched its nuclear weapons development program in the early 1990s, the Korean peninsula has become a critical point of global politics along with the Sino-American (G2) hegemonic competition. The US-DPRK Peace Treaty is the key to the denuclearization and de jure peace on the peninsula as well as Northeast Asia. Different from the comprehensive peace treaty between the four parties (US, China, and the two Koreas) already proposed for the past few years, the book suggests a ‘bilateral’ approach to the agreement between the US and the DPRK, which will trigger the peace as a system considering the US’s practices in this regard after 1783. Such a challenging and provocative method provides deeper understanding of the legal and political circumstances for the expected US-DPRK Peace Treaty. The book will navigate scholars, practitioners, and students towards terminating the 1953 Armistice, establishing nuclear peace as well as a rapprochement between the two countries. In practice, it will be a useful guideline for the conflicting parties in the various parts of the globe to adopt peace treaties in the twenty-first century.

Book Korean War

  • Pages : 37 pages

Book excerpt: The Korean War, which lasted from June 25, 1950, to July 27, 1953, was a conflict between North and South Korea. It began when North Korea invaded South Korea after a series of border battles and uprisings in the South. The United Nations supported South Korea, with the United States as its primary backer, while North Korea received support from China and the Soviet Union. On July 27, 1953, the war ended with an armistice. After Japan's surrender to the Allies on August 15, 1945, at the end of World War II, Korea, which had been under Japanese rule for 35 years, was divided along the 38th parallel by the United States and the Soviet Union. This division led to the establishment of two sovereign entities in 1948: the Democratic People's Republic of Korea in the north, led by the communist ruler Kim Il-sung, and the Republic of Korea in the south, led by the authoritarian Syngman Rhee. Both claimed to be the legitimate authority for all of Korea and rejected the border as a long-term solution. The Korean War began when troops from the North Korean People's Army crossed the border into South Korea. In response, the UN Security Council declared it an invasion and authorized the formation of a UN Command to repel the North Korean forces. The UN forces, primarily composed of US troops, launched a daring counteroffensive from Incheon in September 1950, cutting off the North Korean troops and forcing them to retreat. However, Chinese forces from the People's Volunteer Army joined the war effort in October 1950, leading to a UN withdrawal from North Korea. Chinese troops remained stationed in North Korea, and the conflict continued with various offensives until an armistice was reached in July 1953.
