Book excerpt: Excerpt from Japanese Diplomacy and Force in Korea Treaties have not protected her - the national Korean archives must hold an interesting col lection of these pacts between nations, for which, in the case of Korea, the phrase, scraps of paper most aptly applies. Coming down to the present through fourteen years of Japanese domination, sometimes termed benevolent assimilation, Koreans find this to be the present tragic condition of their national existence. Book Treaties and Conventions with Or Concerning China and Korea 1894 1904 Classic Reprint

Download or read book Treaties and Conventions with Or Concerning China and Korea 1894 1904 Classic Reprint written by William Woodville Rockhill and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-14 with total page 572 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Treaties and Conventions With or Concerning China and Korea, 1894-1904 In view of the great importance of the industrial and commercial concessions made within the last ten years by China, not only to various Powers, but to divers foreign or mixed companies or corpora tions, and individuals, it has been thought advisable to include in the present volume the text of the most important of these documents, arranged in chronological order. Part II of the work contains (1) the treaties, conventions, agree ments, etc., made with or concerning Korea, and (2) the concessions or contracts for the building of railways, development of mines, etc., in the same country during the period covered in the first part of the work. The sketch maps showing the boundaries of the territory leased by France at Kuang-chou Wan and that leased by Great Britain at Kow loon, are official; but it has been impossible to obtain the official Russian map giving the boundaries of the territory leased in the Liao tung Peninsula from China in 1898, and of the Neutral Zone north of the same. The map given is a reproduction from the large map of North Eastern China, prepared by Mr. C. H. Wacher, formerly Rus sian minister to Korea, and is probably correct. Book The Renaissance of Korea Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Renaissance of Korea Classic Reprint written by Joseph Waddington Graves and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-31 with total page 86 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Renaissance of Korea This is not the time when sentimental friends of liberty and weeping advocates of oppressed nations are likely to be heard. The world is too full of woe to listen to any tale of far-away wrongs, when the home situation is scarcely tolerable. To be heard at all above the wail of humanity, a special cause must have as its spokesman one who knows whereof he testifies, who can present the case calmly, justly, forcefully and without rancour. He ought, also, to be a person whose horizon is wider than the Korean's, or even that of the Far East, a man with weltanschauung and a mind that comprehends the meaning of world move ments as a great whole. Such a person is the author. A British subject, and so by nationality one of Japan's allies, he has seen with his own eyes in Japan and Korea what that Ally is doing, and' he knows what the underlying objectives are. He also knows from personal and firsthand sources what actually occurred in Korea last year. History has supplied him with the foundation in early and later centuries upon which modern Korea has been built. 'when the present writer recalls the many hundreds of pages of manuscript personally examined, detailing the true story of the fateful year of 1919, not to speak of what he has read of the earlier outbreak of 19] I, he marvels at the temperate tone of the chapters relating to events of last year. The Christian spirit of Captain Graves and his judicial mind have made him give to the public a calm, dis passionate statement of the entire case in its historical setting and its tragical outcome. Book The Colonial Policy of Japan in Korea Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Colonial Policy of Japan in Korea Classic Reprint written by Fred A. Mckenzie and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-17 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Colonial Policy of Japan in Korea Then in 1876 Japan came and conquered. A treaty of peace and friendship was made between the Empire and the kingdom, by which three ports were opened to Japanese commerce, and Japanese subjects were given the privilege of travelling within an area of about three miles around each port. The Japanese further secured a right of establishing a Legation in Seoul, the Korean capital. This treaty was followed in a few years by others, with America, with Great Britain, and with various European Powers. Consulates-general and then Legations were established in Seoul, and the West found itself in touch with the quaintest and most fantastic of the peoples of the East. The King and autocrat of Korea, living in his wonderful palace underneath the shadow of the mountain at Seoul, heard of the marvels of the West. Even his great dancing-hall, the hall of the hundred pillars, or his wonderful lake of the thousand lilies, or his armies of white - robed singing - girls failed then to satisfy him. He must know of other lands. So he had foreign teachers; the wives of missionaries made friends with the Empress and schemers and intriguers of every kind came and advanced their plans for the progress of the kingdom. Only in 1882 did the United States secure a treaty, and that opened the country to foreign trade only in the capital, Seoul, and three ports. But in this treaty Korea was treated with as an inde pendent State, and its people are distinct from either Chinese or Japanese and well repay study and mission ary labors. This little story is one of the first to pre sent this slightly known land and its customs, and therefore deserves special attention from all who are interested in the Christiam'zing of Oriental nations. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Problems of the Far East: Japan, Korea, China In this New Edition, which has been carefully revised throughout, I have corrected a few mistakes that had crept into the first, and have introduced a good deal of additional matter, supplied or suggested by the events of the past year. The Revision Treaty between Great Britain and Japan, and the Treaty of Peace between Japan and China, are printed as appendices; and in a fresh chapter I have endeavoured to sum up the main issues of the recent conflict, and to forecast its bearing upon the Asiatic situation. I should add that the greater part of this chapter was written before the late change of Government in England, and that it has been composed in entire independence of official information or authority. Book The Interrogation Rooms of the Korean War

Download or read book The Interrogation Rooms of the Korean War written by Monica Kim and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2020-11-03 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Traditional histories of the Korean War have long focused on violations of the thirty-eighth parallel, the line drawn by American and Soviet officials in 1945 dividing the Korean peninsula. But The interrogation rooms of the Korean War presents an entirely new narrative, shifting the perspective from the boundaries of the battlefield to inside the interrogation room. Upending conventional notions of what we think of as geographies of military conflict, Monica Kim demonstrates how the Korean War evolved from a fight over territory to one over human interiority and the individual human subject, forging the template for the U.S. wars of intervention that would predominate during the latter half of the twentieth century and beyond. Kim looks at how, during the armistice negotiations, the United States and their allies proposed a new kind of interrogation room: one in which POWs could exercise their "free will" and choose which country they would go to after the ceasefire. The global controversy that erupted exposed how interrogation rooms had become a flashpoint for the struggles between the ambitions of empire and the demands for decolonization, as the aim of interrogation was to produce subjects who attested to a nation's right to govern. The complex web of interrogators and prisoners -- Japanese-American interrogators, Indian military personnel, Korean POWs and interrogators, and American POWs -- that Kim uncovers contradicts the simple story in U.S. popular memory of "brainwashing" during the Korean War

Book Afterlives of Letters

Download or read book Afterlives of Letters written by Satoru Hashimoto and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2023-10-24 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When East Asia opened itself to the world in the nineteenth century, Chinese, Japanese, and Korean intellectuals had shared notions of literature because of the centuries-long cultural exchanges in the region. As modernization profoundly destabilized cultural norms, they ventured to create new literature for the new era. Satoru Hashimoto offers a novel way of understanding the origins of modern literature in a transregional context, drawing on Chinese-, Japanese-, and Korean-language texts in both classical and vernacular forms. He argues that modern literature came into being in East Asia through writerly attempts at reconstructing the present’s historical relationship to the past across the cultural transformations caused by modernization. Hashimoto examines writers’ anachronistic engagement with past cultures deemed obsolete or antithetical to new systems of values, showing that this transnational process was integral to the emergence of modern literature. A groundbreaking cross-cultural excavation of the origins of modern literature in East Asia featuring remarkable linguistic scope, Afterlives of Letters bridges Asian studies and comparative literature and delivers a remapping of world literature.
