Book Politics of East Asian Free Trade Agreements

Download or read book Politics of East Asian Free Trade Agreements written by Byung-il Choi and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-03-23 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This textbook explains the politics of free trade agreements in Japan and South Korea. Examining free trade agreements in Japan and South Korea since the late 1990s, Choi and Oh analyze the role of institutions, political leaders, sectoral interests, and civil society in placing the two countries on alternate paths of free trade agreements at different points in time. Systematically approaching the politics of free trade agreements from each perspective, they expose the domestic political underpinnings of free trade agreements in a global trade order that is increasingly fraught with conflict. A valuable textbook for students of international political economy and international trade in East Asia, particularly those focusing on Japan and South Korea. It’s also a useful resource for scholars and policymakers looking to better understand trade politics in East Asia.

Download or read book The Impact of Free Trade Agreements on Trade in Goods in the Agricultural Sector of the Republic of Korea The KORUS FTA and the KOREU FTA written by Alexander Schmid and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2021-01-11 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bachelor Thesis from the year 2020 in the subject Economics - Foreign Trade Theory, Trade Policy, grade: 2,0, Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz (Chair of International Finance), course: Bachelorseminar: Trade Policy: Topics in Trade Policy, language: English, abstract: Over the last twenty years South Korea has signed several free trade agreements, including one with the U.S. in 2007 and one with the E.U. in 2010, which include tariff reductions. This thesis examines the impact of tariff reductions through free trade agreements on the value of imports of a single product representative for the agricultural sector through several regression analyses using a Poisson pseudo maximum likelihood estimator. Besides the two exporters of interest, the European Union and the United States, Canada, Mexico, Chile and Australia complement the data set as reference value. This study starts with a literature review on existing literature on the two free trade agreements and the effects of free trade on the agricultural economy. In chapter three an independent investigation is conducted explaining the background to the two free trade agreements and, more generally, the effects of trade liberalization on the agricultural sector. The following chapter describes the course of the investigation with the explanation of the operational variables and the data using descriptive statistics. The data is used in an estimation model to evaluate the effect of a reduction of tariff rates according to an agreement on the value of imports. The individual components of the estimation model are explained in more detail, followed by a presentation of the results of the estimation using the STATA statistics program. The last chapter concludes the whole investigation, together with considerations on possible further studies of this topic.

Book The U S South Korea Free Trade Agreement

Download or read book The U S South Korea Free Trade Agreement written by Keddrick E. Barnes and published by Nova Science Publishers. This book was released on 2012 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an overview of the U.S.-South Korea Free Trade Agreement (KORUS FTA) which covers a wide range of bilateral economic activities, including trade in manufactured goods, agricultural products and services; foreign investment; government procurement; intellectual property rights; and worker rights and environmental protection. The United States and South Korea entered into the KORUS FTA as a means to further solidify an already strong economic relationship by reducing barriers to trade and investment between them and to resolve long-standing troublesome economic issues. The United States specifically sought increased access to South Korean markets for agricultural products, services, and foreign investment. For South Korean leaders, the KORUS FTA is a mechanism to promote reform in its own economy and also to gain a competitive advantage in the U.S. markets for autos and other manufactured goods.

Book The Proposed South Korea U S Free Trade Agreement KORUS FTA

Download or read book The Proposed South Korea U S Free Trade Agreement KORUS FTA written by and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Close to midnight on April 1, 2007, President Bush sent a message to the leaders of the House and Senate, notifying them of his intent to enter into a free trade agreement (FTA) with South Korea. The President's notification to Congress signified the completion of the negotiations on the U.S.-South Korea FTA (KORUS FTA) that the two countries launched on February 2, 2006, at South Korea's request. The negotiations covered a wide range of subjects, including a number of sensitive issues -- autos, agriculture, trade remedies, among others -- that have plagued the U.S.-South Korean trading relationship for decades. As a result, the FTA negotiations were at times contentious and their successful completion in doubt. Congress will have to approve implementation legislation for the KORUS FTA before it can enter into force. The negotiations were conducted under the trade promotion authority (TPA), also called fast-track trade authority, that the Congress granted the President under the Bipartisan Trade Promotion Act of 2002 (the Act) (P.L. 107-210). The authority allows the President to enter into trade agreements that receive expedited congressional consideration (no amendments and limited debate). The United States and South Korea conducted the FTA negotiations with a high degree of political risk for both countries, and that risk will likely carry over as their respective legislatures debate the merits of the FTA. Judging from information released to date, the results of the FTA negotiations were the product of much compromise. As negotiators from both countries stated, the two sides were able to accomplish some of their objectives, but neither side got everything it wanted A detailed and accurate analysis of the agreement must await the public release of the complete text, which is anticipated in May. In the meantime, some highlights of the results of the negotiations can be provided based on official U.S. and South Korean summaries and comments as well as comments from informed private sector representatives. Preliminary reactions from the U.S. business community have varied and in a number of cases have been cautious because the final text of the FTA has yet to be released. These reactions largely reflect perceptions of to what degree the objectives of various groups were realized in the final agreement. Preliminary reactions in South Korea were similarly varied. This report is designed to assist Members of the 110th Congress as they consider the merits of the KORUS FTA. It examines the results of the FTA negotiations in the context of the overall U.S.-South Korean economic relationship, U.S. objectives, and South Korean objectives. The report will be updated as events warrant.

Book Asia s Free Trade Agreements

Download or read book Asia s Free Trade Agreements written by Masahiro Kawai and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2011 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: East Asia is the region of the world that is changing fastest in terms of trade arrangements. Dozens of free-trade agreements are signed every year, turning a complex situation into the East Asian noodle bowl of FTAs. This book addresses the crucial question posed by these new agreements how do they affect business? While many studies have focused on government-to-government issues, this book gets to the heart of the matter, studying what it means for the firms actually doing the trade and investment. I recommend this book to any serious student of trade, particularly those interested in understanding the rapidly evolving landscape in this most dynamic part of the world. Richard Baldwin, Professor of International Economics, Graduate Institute, Geneva, Switzerland The pursuit of more than one hundred Free Trade Agreements in East Asia is quietly producing a fundamental change in the global economic architecture. This path-breaking new volume provides an indispensable guide to the practical effect of such agreements on commercial transactions in the region. It is a must-read for businessmen and policymakers who seek to both understand the impact of FTAs in the real world and expand their contributions to economic growth and development. C. Fred Bergsten, Director, Peterson Institute for International Economics, US [East Asia] needs to think about appropriate measures to overcome the Asian FTA noodle bowl in the future. In this vein, the study suggests several practical measures including encouraging rationalization and flexibility of rules of origin, upgrading origin administration, improving business participation in FTA consultations, and strengthening institutional support systems for SMEs. . . It is hoped that this study will contribute to strengthening regional trade policies in Asia and compatibilities with global trade rules. Haruhiko Kuroda, President, Asian Development Bank This is a valuable contribution in a crowded field. Kawai and Wignaraja have gone beyond familiar arguments about the relative merits of regionalism and multilateralism to ask businesses what it all means to them. Policymakers should take note. Patrick Low, Chief Economist, WTO For policymakers in the region, the debate is no longer between regionalism and multilateralism. The real question is how we should create the model for regionalism that will become the building blocks to a multilateral trading system and avoid raising costs of doing business from the noodle bowl effect. Therefore the comparative and micro-level research found in this book provides valuable insights on the impact of FTAs on businesses. These insights will be relevant input as policymakers forge ahead in implementing regional FTAs, thinking of ways to amend and improve on them and, most importantly, harmonize or consolidate between existing regional FTAs in East Asia. Mari Pangestu, Minister of Trade, Indonesia The spread of Asia s free trade agreements (FTAs) has sparked an important debate on the impact of such agreements on business activity. This pioneering study uses new evidence from surveys of East Asian exporters including Japan, the People s Republic of China, the Republic of Korea and three ASEAN economies of the Philippines, Singapore and Thailand to shed light on the FTA debate. Critics are concerned that FTAs erode the multilateral trading process and foster an alarming noodle bowl of overlapping regulations and rules of origin requirements which may be costly to business. Asia s Free Trade Agreements makes key recommendations for improving business use of FTA preferences, reducing costs of FTAs and creating a region-wide FTA. This well-researched and documented book will appeal to undergraduate and postgraduate students in international business, international economics, economic development, public administration and public policy. Academics, researchers and members of think-tanks around the world will also benefit from this book as will trad
